She stares at my hand then at me. “But there’s no music.”

“There is, you just have to learn how to listen.” I wrap an arm around her back and bring her close.

We spend the next few minutes dancing to a rhythm of silence. “Do you hear it now?” I ask as she leans her head against my chest, swaying together to an invisible melody.

“Yeah,” she whispers with a smile in her voice. “I hear it.”

CHAPTER12

LEXI

Lilah glares playfullyat me from across the table as she picks up her iced tea and takes small sips. I decided it was best to talk to her about Jax and me in person and figured our lunch break was the perfect opportunity.

“Come on, don’t be mad at me!” I huff out a breath as a waiter places another basket of bread on our table then walks away. We like their bread a little too much. “I just couldn’t tell you. You and Damian have so much on your plates. I didn’t want you to worry about how this would affect your relationship.”

She places her cup down and edges closer to the table. “First, I’m not mad, Lexi, I love you. I only want you to be happy. Am I worried that you’ll get hurt? Yes, I am, but I respect your decision.” She throws a piece of a French fry in her mouth. “And don’t worry about me and Damian, don’t be afraid to tell me anything. He and I are stronger than ever.”

“That’s it? You’re not going to tell me what a huge mistake I’m making? Yada, yada?”

“There’ll be no yada, yada coming from me.” She grins. “You’re a big girl, who you sleep with is your choice. Plus, Jax is kind of growing on me. I mean he’s still irritating, but he’s notthatbad.”

“Yeah, he’s all right.”

She leans back into her seat. “You totally have stars in your eyes right now, you know that?”

Crossing my arms, I narrow my gaze at her. “I so do not.”

“Uh huh.” She raises a brow, a clever smile on her lips.” Let’s go with that.”

Glaring into my plate, I pick up a piece of steak with my fork.

“Fine, no more talk of Jax, got it. Oh, and before I forget…” She digs into her handbag and pulls out a small pink box. “This is for you.”

I tilt my head and ask, “What is it?”

“Just open it.” I take the box from her and peel off the shimmering white wrapping paper.

“Oh my God!” I screech as I stare at a mini champagne bottle with a tag that reads: Will you be my maid of honor?I’ve so been hoping for this!

I jump out of my seat and squeeze my arms around her neck. “Hell yes, I will be!”

I take my seat after squishing her, excitement pouring out of me. I’m so happy for her and what she found after the suffering she endured.

“I’m going to throw you the best bachelorette party known to humankind! Oh man, so many ideas flying around in my head.”

She wrinkles her nose and chuckles. “Should I be afraid?”

“Probably.”

“Is it too late to rescind the offer?”

“Oh, definitely yes. You’ll have to pry the title out of my cold, dead hands.”

She smiles, her sapphire blue eyes lighting up. “I love you so much.”

“I love you too.”

“He better not break your heart.” Her tone is laced with sadness.
