The scarf looked great, and we found a pub nearby where we had our last Irish coffee.

“I’ve enjoyed this, Flynn. It’s not been so crazy as LA. It’s nice not having people want to take a picture all the time. Also, I hate myself in photos.”

“Me too. That is why I get Bec to put so much makeup on me.”

Avery thumped my arm. “You know you’re hot. When I got my breath back after falling in your pool. I thought shit this guy is fine. I am going to get some of that.”

“And I am glad you did.”

“I bought you something, by the way.” Avery popped a bag on the table.

“Is it a shillelagh, and will I be able to get it through customs?” I didn’t feel comfortable getting gifts. I would rather give them. I opened the bag to find a photograph of the two of us in Dingle in the pub holding up our glasses of Guinness. There was a small leather and silver wristband.

“They said it was an infinity band. I thought how you play an immortal on the show it would be appropriate.”

“I love them, and when I get a new place, this picture will have pride of honor on the mantlepiece.”

The flight back was long but uneventful, and I was keen to hear what Drake had to say. It was Monday tomorrow, and I had to be on set. Whatever he had found out, I hoped we could do something about it today.

We arrived and headed to Declan’s though I would be going back to Jack’s eventually. After all the greetings were done, I made the call to Drake and asked him to come over. I was tired but I wanted to hear what he had to say. Thirty minutes later and he arrived. Declan led us both to his office. I was tall, but Drake was a big guy, and I would not want to get on the wrong side of him. His dark hair and tanned skin made me think he might be Hawaiian.

“I have been talking to my contacts and seeing who might have a vendetta against you. At first, I came up blank. I mean so blank that I knew someone was keeping things quiet for a reason. It meant there was money or corruption involved.”

“I’ve never been involved with anything suspect as far as I know,” I said.

“Not you, but the person who was after you. You suspected Brad Sendler. He is a hard man to get close to. There is a money trail back to a group that I would say he is laundering for. It goes through so many hoops you would need a team of investigators to get him for that one. It seems the DA had been looking into him for a while as well.”

“So, what does this have to do with the powder and the fire?” Declan asked.

“It seems he has pissed someone off and I finally got a break.”

“Who is willing to go against him in Hollywood? I had to go down under for a while to get away.”

“It’s his father-in-law. Once his wife left him, she told her father what happened. The violence and the intimidation. He wants to get Brad but knows it won’t be easy. His daughter said she would testify, but Brad’s lawyers would put her through the wringer. He doesn’t want to see his girl go through that.”

“And she has been through enough already,” I said.

“Exactly. She heard about the pictures you had and took that as an opportunity to get out.”

“I can talk to Mitch who took them, but I am sure he would be happy to hand the originals over.” I shook my head. “I want to see Brad put away as much as anyone, but how do we know he was behind the stuff that happened to me? I don’t want to be always looking over my shoulder.”

Drake smiled, and I hoped he had more good news.

“It seems Brad hasn’t kept his distance from his lackey as much as usual. In fact, in the past, he was using his connections in the mob which was why it was so difficult.” Drake huffed. “I am trying to set up a meeting tomorrow with a guy called Mark. He is the gardener at Brad’s mansion. It seems Mark likes to gamble and is in a lot of debt. So, he might be willing to do some dirty work for him.”

“Is there anything we can do?” Declan asked.

“No, just leave it to me.”

Drake left, and we headed back to see the others. I was so glad to tell everyone what was happening. For the first time in ages, I thought things were going to work out well. Mom was happy, and hopefully, there would not be any more threats. The only cloud on the horizon was the fact that Avery only had one week left here. Before I left Ireland, Mom had given me a ring that had belonged to her great great-aunt. It was rubies and diamonds. Before this week was out, I would ask her to marry me. All I could hope was that she would say yes.

TWENTY-EIGHT

AVERY

It was my last week, and I was sad and excited. It had always been a business fling with Flynn. Yes, we cared about each other, but we lived in two different countries, and I had to be realistic. He had stayed with me last night and we had made love. I had gotten used to waking up this last week with him next to me in the morning. I would be running up a huge phone bill if we were going to call each other all the time though. Somehow, I didn’t think my vibrator was going to cut it after the real thing with Flynn.

We were both saying we were falling for each other but was that enough? He hadn’t said I love you to me. I was overthinking everything and getting myself flustered. I needed to concentrate on work.
