And he’d taken that risk for me.

I’d had a few guys I’d dated before tell me they loved me, but it never felt like this.

It was the look in Maddox’s eyes when he’d pledged his love to me that felt like my world had shifted in a way.

Like nothing would ever be the same again.

Hell, when Dikota had told me he loved me, it was over a bowl of ramen noodles, and his eyes hadn’t left the TV screen. It was sort of like anI love you, can you pass the saltmoment.

I’d known it wasn’t forever.

Nothing had ever felt like forever before this moment.

So, I was going to enjoy it because I knew what we shared was rare. I knew that Maddox didn’t take these words lightly, and he was a man who meant what he said.

He loved me.

There was no question, and I’d never experienced that before now outside of my family.

But then his phone rang a couple dozen times, and he cursed when he realized they were waiting for us downstairs, and we had to hurry out the door.

I knew that Maddox was concerned this would overwhelm me, but it didn’t. I just found the whole thing odd, but I was channeling my inner royal tonight and going with the flow.

“One more,” the guy in the flannel shirt who’d been shouting endless questions at us said, as he jogged along the red carpet, following us to the end before we’d stepped inside the hotel.

Was it weird as hell that we were staying at this hotel, and we had to make our way outside to walk the red carpet and reenter the hotel?

Yes. Not the best use of time, but I guess this was more about appearances tonight, and everyone in the family needed to be seen supporting Davis and Claire’s nuptials.

I hadn’t even met them yet, as we’d been ushered out the back door of the hotel where we’d slipped into a fancy black car, and I’d requested beer in my champagne flute because I didn’t want to get too tipsy on the bubbly stuff before I met his family. We’d sipped our cocktails and pulled back in front of the hotel, where Maddox proceeded to get out of the car and assisted me and my gorgeous black dress out, as well.

We walked. We smiled. There were a couple of photographers out there taking pictures and shouting questions. Light flashes made it difficult to see, but I just blinked in between stops when we’d walk and try to refocus.

Maddox leaned in multiple times and reminded me not to respond to their incessant questions.

He’d also distracted me by whispering naughty things in my ear the entire walk from the car to the hotel.

“I can’t wait to get you back to the room so I can slip my hands beneath your dress, slide your panties over, and fuck you senseless.”

“I have to keep my jacket buttoned so they won’t see how hard and swollen my cock is right now at just the sight of you in this dress.”

I’d chuckled and tried to play it off, squeezing his hand in warning, as desire pooled between my thighs.

After the last photo was taken, my handsome date held up his hand. “That’s the last one.”

“Mr. Lancaster, is this lovely lady just a friend, or is she someone special?” the eager photographer shouted.

Maddox paused and glanced over at me. I could see his wheels turning, trying to decide how he wanted to handle things. “This lovely lady is my girlfriend, and she’s most definitely someone special.”

“How long have you two been together?” someone shouted.

“Who is she?” another man called out.

Maddox intertwined our fingers and looked over one last time. “You got your story. That’s all I have to say about it. Goodnight.”

And then he led me inside.

Once we entered the lobby, there was security everywhere. At least, I assumed that was who they were because they were wearing black suits and appeared to be speaking into some sort of earpiece as their eyes scanned the area around us.
