"Agreed," said Chase. "Don't underestimate how great we all are. We're all pretty fucking awesome."
They all burst out laughing, and Jacob grinned. "Who am I to deprive my sister of my greatness?"
"You're not that rude," Phoebe said.
"He's pretty rude," Dylan said.
"Not rude. Just antisocial. And now he adores everyone!" Phoebe said, trying not to laugh.
"I don't adore everyone," he said, trying to stay grumpy, just because it was fun to get Phoebe going.
She patted his cheeks. "Yes, you do. You just don’t realize it yet." She turned to the party and clapped her hands. "Can I have everyone's attention?"
Jacob rolled his eyes. "Phoebe, don't—"
"Shut up, bro. This is going to be good for you," Dylan said, putting his hand on Jacob's shoulder while Phoebe somehow managed to get a family gathering of more than fifty people between the Harts, the Stocktons, and spouses, and kids to stop talking and pay attention to her.
She held up her arms. "My darling fiancé just found out where his sister is, and he hasn't seen her since she was six. He doesn't want to visit her because he feels like it will be a burden for her to know him…and all of us!"
The party broke out in raucous boos, making Jacob laugh.
"If you think Jacob is being a doofus and should reach out to her, then start dancing!" Phoebe shouted.
Dancing?
But to Jacob's amusement, the entire party started dancing and cheering. Cowboy hats went flying in the air, and someone hit the play button on the outdoor speakers, blasting one of Travis Stockton's hits.
Phoebe turned back to him, beaming at him. "I guess that's it then. You can't overrule family."
Jacob laughed, his heart light with happiness he would never have believed was possible for him. "I'd never overrule family," he agreed.
"Madison better watch out, because she's about to get sucked into the biggest, best family that ever existed," Phoebe said as she looped her arms around his neck. But before she could kiss him, that same family started coming up, talking excitedly, asking questions, surrounding him in a way that he wouldn't have been able to handle not that long ago.
Today? He simply grinned, put his arm around his fiancé, checked on Annie, and then joined right in.
