Delicious.

Getting more intense by the second.

By the time the elevator opened, they were both breathing hard.

He didn't hesitate. He didn't ask. He simply headed straight down the hall and unlocked a door. "We'll have to be quiet," he whispered. "Gabby's right across the hall."

She looked over his shoulder as he carried her into his room and saw her room number. "You booked us across the hall from you?"

"You were afraid of someone hurting you. Was there even a chance I'd stay anywhere except within earshot of you, in case you needed me?" As he spoke, he pushed the door shut, locked it, then carried her to the bed. "I'm a protector, sweetheart. Always have been. Always will be."

Oh, le swoon…

He laid her on the bed and then lowered himself on top of her, nibbling at her neck as he used one hand to unlace her boots. "Leave no child or woman unprotected," he murmured, "at least to the extent we can."

This was the man she'd been so afraid of for so long? This man? "You had me at protector."

He laughed, his voice a rich, deep, laugh. Then he started kissing her again, and she forgot about things like room numbers and swooning. All she could focus on was the feeling of being in Keegan's arms again, after so many years.

Being with him was everything she'd remembered, and so much more. Before, their connection had been instant and vibrant, but it had also been the innocence of two ungrounded teenagers trying to cling to a moment of wonder in the midst of hardship.

This time, it was so much more, so much deeper. When he pulled her shirt over her head and pressed a kiss to the swell of her breast, it felt as if her soul had come home, settling happily and purposefully into his safekeeping.

His body felt magical against hers. Hard. Muscled. Strong. As more and more clothes kept disappearing, and more and more skin-to-skin contact happened, she felt like she'd fallen into an oasis of warmth and sizzling electricity.

He kissed his way down her belly, his hands splayed on her bare hips, a caress that invited her to melt into his grasp…which she did. Complete surrender. Total trust. She hadn't let go so completely in years, maybe ever. She became one with the moment, with the intimacy, with the heat leaping back and forth between them.

She heard the crinkle of a foil wrapper, and then he was moving over her. They met gazes as he slipped inside her, an easy, perfect fit that made her light up from the inside out.

He smiled, tangling his fingers in her hair as he gazed down at her, such warmth in his eyes. "The look on your face right now is enough to melt even the hardest heart, and my heart is already soft for you."

She grinned back at him, sliding her hands over his muscled chest. "Last time we were together, you weren't this solid."

"You didn't have all these curves either, so I think we both filled in nicely, don't you?" He began to move, eliciting sensations inside her that she hadn't felt in a very long time.

"Oh, God. Yes. I'm definitely the lucky one—"

"No." He paused. "Don't discredit yourself. You're incredible, and I want you to feel that. To know it."

A warm feeling came over her at his urgency, and she couldn’t help but smile. "You're kind of adorable."

He laughed, a deep, rich laugh of pure joy. "Thanks. Me and Millie. And I left her with Bella, by the way. I didn't want her to be alone while you and I were talking."

Thoughtful and adorable? He was too much. But she'd take it—

He bent down and kissed her again, and this time it was a kiss meant to tantalize and tease, to draw her irrevocably into the movement of his hips. She surrendered without hesitation, allowing herself to breathe in the beauty of being with him. When they were teenagers, it had been hot and wild, but clouded with her guilt about how much she wanted to abandon college and stay with him. Dragged down by her own insecurities.

So, this time, she let it all go. She let it be wonderful. She let it feel amazing. She let herself love every second of being with him. And most of all, she let herself feel the warmth and kindness and safety of Keegan himself.

Surrendering to the good emotions changed everything about the moment. It took on an energy of gloriousness, of positivity, of healing. Yes, that was it. Healing. The healing power of love, both of the soul and the body.

And when the moment took her over the edge, she let go. He surrendered at the same moment, and they clung to each other, holding on to the moment, to each other, to the purity of two souls coming back to find each other to finish a story that had barely gotten started.

CHAPTER TWENTY

Sofia nestled deeper against Keegan, closing her eyes to breathe him in. "I don't want to move," she whispered.

He kissed the top of her head. "Me either."
