“Am I going to like Cutter?” asked Tammy.

“He’s a biker from my old life and he’s a tough guy, but I think you’ll like him okay. You will definitely like Lukas. He’s a very quiet person who doesn’t say much, but he’s nice and he’ll be living with us.”

“Is Lukas like your family, Travis?”

“Yes. He’s my family.”

“How old is Lukas?” asked Tammy.

“Umm… he’s about twenty-five or twenty-six, I guess. Around there someplace.”

“Oh. He’s younger than you.”

“Yep. By quite a bit.”

“Is he cute?”

I laughed. “He looks like a Donovan. That’s all I can tell you. They all look about the same. You’ll see him soon enough and you can decide.”

“What about a cooler for the trip—water, Cokes and beer?”

“Yep. Find the cooler, rinse it out and work on that. Once we get rolling, I don’t want to stop every five seconds for a drink.”

By dinner time, Tammy and I were ready to leave. In the morning there would be the Outlaw problem, and once he was squared away, we’d be on our way to Texas.

Billy was having dinner with his parents and then we were all meeting at the roadhouse to celebrate his win.

“What time will we know if Billy won or not?” asked Tammy.

I checked the time. “It’s almost seven. The polls will close and they’ll start counting the votes. We’d better get our butts to the roadhouse for Billy’s party.”

Tammy laughed. “Never been to a victory party, but I seen one on TV once with all the balloons and shit.”

“I’m not sure Jack will have balloons for Billy, but don’t count him out. Jack is a pretty smart guy.”

“I like him,” said Tammy. “He’s always nice to me when we’re at his bar.”

Tammy and I were in the truck on our way to the roadhouse when Billy called me. He was so hyped up, he could hardly talk. “I won, Travis. I won.”

“Fantastic. We’re on our way to the roadhouse now.”

“Did Billy win?”

“He sure did. Let’s help him celebrate.”

Dry Run Roadhouse. Coyote Creek.

The celebration at the roadhouse was in full swing when Tammy and I got there. The band was blasting out a song I liked and I had the feeling my last night in Coyote Creek would be one wild ride.

Jack was behind the bar working like a mad man with a wide smile pasted on his face. His cousin Billy was the new sheriff of Harrison County and Jack was reunited with Savanna—the love of his life—and he couldn’t stop smiling.

“Travis,” hollered Jack, “grab a spot and I’ll set you up. Coke for Tammy.”

“I don’t see any empty booths,” said Tammy. “This place is packed with people.”

“I see a spot. Come on.” Marilyn Pellegrino was drinking alone and I slid into the booth across from her and pulled Tammy in beside me.

Marilyn smiled, and I had almost forgotten how beautiful she was. “Travis. I came to celebrate with you. You’re finally out of the sheriff’s office.”
