“No idea.” Pair of pliers in his hand, Thorn kept on yanking teeth out of the baby pigs, one after the other. The squealing of the baby pigs made it hard to hear. Looked like the sow had given birth to a dozen of the little sausages.

“If you or your wife know what really happened to Chris Concordian, it would go a lot easier on both of you if you told the sheriff now instead of waiting until he finds out the truth and slams ten charges against you. Once you piss Sheriff Frost off, he won’t go easy on you. Just the way he is.”

“Thanks for the warning. I’ve got nothing to tell him.”

Billy smiled. “You have a good day, Mister Thorn.”

Cut Bank Hospital.

Tammy’s eyes were open when I walked into her room, but she still looked out of it. She reached out her hand for me and I sat down next to her bed.

“I want to go home.” Her voice was weak.

“I talked to the doctor out there at the nurses’ station and he wants you until tomorrow to make sure all your levels are where they should be.”

“I don’t care about my levels, Travis. I want to go home to the ranch with you. I can’t stay here. Tibor might come to get me.”

“He can’t come to the hospital, Tammy. I have him locked in jail. He didn’t make bail and he’s locked up until his trial.”

“No jail can hold Tibor. He told me.”

“My jail is holding him just fine. He can’t get out.”

“Are you sure?”

“Positive.”

“What time tomorrow are you coming to get me?”

“Ten in the morning.”

“Okay. I’ll sleep until you get here.”

“Good girl.”

I left the hospital and went back to my squad parked in the loop. I hopped into the driver’s seat and Jud Winedot was on the phone. “Jud, good to hear from you.”

“Sheriff, I found Chris’s truck and it wasn’t on the sideline where I thought it would be.”

“Where was it?”

“Parked behind his accounting office in Conrad.”

“What the hell? I didn’t know there was an office and I should have found that out. Why did you think to look there, Jud?”

“Because I know the county roads like the back of my hand. I’m out there every fuckin day, and after you told me his truck was missing, I searched every place we had ever parked to go hunting and there was no truck. Then I got pissed off thinking the same thing you’re thinking—this stinks. Chris’s death stinks. Am I right?”

“Right.”

“So when I was done work yesterday, I drove down to his office for a snoop around. Doing a little detective work on my own to make things right for Chris.”

“I didn’t realize he had a separate office. Suzie didn’t mention it. I thought he worked from home.”

“She wouldn’t mention it if they snatched Chris from his office and his truck was still there, would they?”

“Nope. Sure wouldn’t.”

“That’s what I’m thinking after finding his truck parked there. He wasn’t hunting alone in the bush at all. He was at work.”
