Jack made a face.

“Know any of his buddies? Names? Anything?”

“Sorry, I don’t.”

“That’s okay. I’ll find him.” I emptied my first glass and filled it up again from the pitcher. “I saw Savanna while I was at the hospital and she’s doing well.”

That put a smile on Jack’s face. “Yeah, she is and I think we’re doing better too—you know—like her and me.”

“Great. I want that to happen for you, Jack.”

“Me too.”

As I sat at the bar nursing my beer, I couldn't get Tibor Garrison out of my mind. I had to find him and bring him to justice for what he did to that kid. But Burke’s warning lingered in my mind. Was he right? Was I out of my league going up against a guy like Tibor?

I shook it off. I’d killed dozens of guys like Tibor who thought they were tougher than me. At least Dale Burden had.

Cut Bank Hospital.

After having a peek at Tammy Traynor, I left her sleeping and didn’t disturb her. I spoke to the nurse on duty and told her I needed to speak to Tammy’s doctor. Couldn’t remember his name, even though I tried hard. Then I hunkered down in the waiting area across the corridor in the chair next to Billy.

“You go enjoy your dinner with Brenda,” I said and he woke with a start and stared at me like I was a stranger. “Don’t forget to feed my horse.”

“I won’t. Thanks, boss. I’m out of here.”

Billy hustled off to his dinner date and I got myself a disgusting cup of coffee from a vending machine at the end of the hall.

After drinking only about a third of the muddy brew, I had almost dozed off when Glenda breezed in looking all fresh and pretty. Her hair looked better than it usually did and I wondered if I should say something or if I’d come off sounding like a dick.

She plunked down in the chair next to me and handed me a container of genuine coffee she’d picked up at Dunkin Donuts. A welcome change.

“Thanks for the coffee.” I pointed to the cardboard container on the table in front of us. “That ain’t real coffee.”

“Have you had dinner?” she asked.

“Not much. I ate a sandwich when I fed the prisoners a few hours ago. I’ll get something later.”

“You work too hard, Travis.”

“Nope. I don’t work hard at all.”

She smiled and snuggled a little bit closer to me and kind of hugged my arm. I wasn’t ready for that kind of a move and wanted to push her away.

I don’t want a girlfriend.

I sipped my coffee and listened to her talk about running the dress store with her twin sister and how she wished she could be a cop instead. She talked like a Montana native and she was funny and kept me amused.

We had hardly talked at all at the roadhouse on our so-called date, so finding out how smart and funny Glenda could be came as a complete surprise.

The waiting room was deserted after visiting hours were over and Glenda and I had been sitting there, just the two of us, for a couple of hours before anything happened.

I heard raised voices coming from the nurses’ station and sauntered into the corridor to see what was going on.

A big guy wearing a leather jacket, long black hair hanging down his back was hollering that he wanted to see Tammy Garrison. Had to be Tibor.

“You’re under arrest for assault, Tibor Garrison.” I was behind him pulling the cuffs off my belt when he turned and laughed in my face.

The earring in his left ear twirled and the diamond caught the light as he snarled out those famous words that turned me into the Hulk. “You’ll never take me.”
