“Walmart parking lot in Great Falls. The city cops spotted it and called.”

“Burke switched vehicles. I didn’t peg him as being that smart. Find out if there is a stolen vehicle missing from that same lot, Molly.”

She nodded and got right on it while I drank my coffee and waited for the answer.

“Good call, Travis. White Chevy Tahoe was taken.”

“Issue a BOLO on the Tahoe with an attachment. Armed and dangerous. Call 911. Do not approach.”

Molly nodded. “I’ll get it out there right away.”

“Billy and I have to do the notification for Garnet Booth and then we’re going to talk to Art Anderson before we go home. You get out of here and lock up. I’ll grab the calls if any come in.”

Molly smiled. “I’ll go soon.”

Peterson’s Garage.

Before we went anywhere, we needed more gas. Leaving the vehicles running so we wouldn’t freeze to death was burning up fuel at a speedy rate.

At the corner garage—the only one in Coyote Creek—I pulled up to the pumps on one side and Billy pulled up in the other county vehicle on the other side.

Kirby came running out bundled up in a huge parka with wolf fur around his face, a scarf over his mouth and nose. Hard to tell it was him. “Fill up both of them, Sheriff?”

“Yep. Check the oil too if your hands aren’t frozen like mine are.”

“These babies need service, Sheriff. Especially in shit weather like this. You might have a fuckin dead battery.”

“You reminded me, Kirby, and I was delinquent. I’ll get one of them in tomorrow for sure.”

Kirby nodded as he filled the tank. “Brutal fuckin weather. Did you catch that fucker Burke Foster yet?”

“Almost. We’ve got a couple of good leads on him. You hear anything?” Kirby had provided me with information a couple of times before when he had something, and he knew I was always willing to pay him.

“Might’ve heard Clay talking to a guy who knew a guy,” said Kirby in a low voice, further muffled by the scarf over his face.

“Oh, yeah? How much is this info going to cost me?”

“Twenty?”

“Is it worth twenty, Kirby?” He pulled down the scarf and his breath came out like puffs of steam as he screwed on the gas cap and slammed the little door shut.

I pulled out my wallet and got ready to kiss twenty bucks goodbye.

Kirby moved closer to where I was standing and mumbled, “Girl in Great Falls used to live in Ethridge. Brittany Gibson.”

I nodded and handed over the twenty. “Anything else you hear, you call me. I’m good for more, kid.”

“Thanks, Sheriff. Don’t forget about the service.”

“Billy will be here first thing in the morning with his truck.”

Chappell Residence.

We stood freezing our asses off on Mrs. Chappell’s porch. She was Garnet Booth’s daughter and his next of kin. She opened the door and immediately asked about her father.

“Sheriff, is my dad in trouble?” Pulling the door open wider, she let us into the front hall and closed the door with a shiver.

“Why would you ask that?”
