“Not a lot of cash. I go to the bank every day. Could have been a couple of thousand. Under three. I never count it until I make up the deposit.”

“Jack is upset.”

“He’s been living out there in the waiting room.”

“He’s a good guy, Savanna. He loves you.”

“Yeah, I know. There’s just that other thing. I don’t know if Jack can ever get past it.”

“Anything I can handle for you while you’re lounging in here?”

“Jack’s got it. He’s doing a few store-related things, but thanks. Your job is to find those bastards. I’ll never forgive them for killing Tim.” Savanna teared up and I handed her a tissue.

“Get some rest. I’m tracking down a lead.”

“Don’t be gentle when you find them, Travis.”

“I won’t. I promise.”

I left the ICU room, my thoughts consumed by the task at hand. I had to find these guys, and I had to do it quickly. Savanna was counting on me, and so was Jack. So were a lot of people, and I wasn’t going to let them down.

Krystal Thorndyke had provided another lead and I was hoping it panned out.

Knudsen Residence. Cut Bank.

After the hospital visit, Billy and I called on Heather Knudsen. She was the girl who used to work at the Palace and she was the girl Burke Foster used to date.

When we knocked on her door, she was friendly enough and invited us in out of the cold. I introduced myself and Billy, but she knew who we were.

“I haven’t seen Burke since we broke up and that was a couple of years ago.”

“How old is your little girl?” asked Billy. The toddler playing with toys on the carpet had flaming red hair.

“She’ll soon be two.”

“Any friends Burke might go to if he was laying low for a while?” I asked her.

“I don’t know who he hangs out with now.” Heather sounded sincere. “I haven’t seen him at all. Burke and Art Andrews used to be buddies.”

“Art Andrews?” I had to raise an eyebrow on that one.

“They could’ve had a falling out,” said Pauline. “I wouldn’t know.”

“If Burke happens to contact you for any reason, would you give me a shout?” I handed her a card.

“He won’t call me. He ain’t in my life anymore and I ain’t in his. We went our separate ways.”

We went back to the squad and Billy thought Heather was lying. “I didn’t think she was, but the little girl could belong to Burke. The timeline fits when they broke up.”

“He didn’t want a kid tying him down,” said Billy, “and he dumped Heather. Nice guy.”

“He ain’t one of those.”

“Did you get the tag in?” asked Billy.

“Yeah, I did, but it will be useless unless she contacts him, or the other way around.”

“I still think if Burke knew that kid was his, there would’ve been some contact in two years,” said Billy. “Did you see how red her hair was?”
