“Don’t be hesitating,” Sofie said, her words breaking through Alana’s thoughts. “Go. Take it right now. If you’re not, then yeah, you’re just sick.” Her friend shrugged, as if it were a no-brainer.

But this was a big deal.

Had she and London created a life?

Nodding, Alana left the kitchen and scurried to the half bath down the hall. Shutting the door, she stood in front of the mirror, turned to the side, and opened her robe to look at her pudgy belly. It appeared to be plumper, but she assumed it was her cooking. London loved to eat, so she had been cooking way more than when she lived alone. She didn’t know how he ate so much and still had the perfect muscular body.

She tried to imagine what she would look like with a basketball of a belly and grinned. She grew excited.

What if there was life growing inside of her?

Would it be a little boy with a tan who looked exactly like his father? Or a little brown-skinned girl, an exact replica of her mother?

Alana couldn’t contain her excitement.

“Okay, let’s do this.” Within minutes, she was leaning back against the wall, waiting, the test sitting on the counter. Her heart was racing. She could barely hear anything over the pounding of it.

The instructions had said to wait three minutes before reading the results. This had to be the longest three minutes ever.

Her first instinct was to call London, but he was busy right now, and she didn’t want to interrupt him or be a distraction. He would be home later.

Alana glanced at her watch.

It was time.

Stepping forward, she picked up the pregnancy test and froze.

London let himself into the house and paused. It was silent. He wasn’t sure if Alana was asleep yet or not.

Today had been one of the biggest moments in his career. He had wished to have Alana there with him, but she wasn’t feeling well. Her health was more important to him than any paycheck.

Khalil was now an official member of the Cleveland basketball organization. The signing bonus for London’s company was massive. His sports agency was now a powerhouse for recruiting talent. They were making moves, and because of his negotiation for Khalil, he had a few other high-profile clients calling him.

But now, he wanted to have a private celebration with his woman.

He stopped at the stairs, noticing that the light from the family room was on.

She must have been waiting up for him.

He patted his inner jacket pocket, feeling the small square box resting inside. He took a deep breath and walked toward the room in search of the woman who had changed his life.

He found her curled up on the couch, snuggled underneath a blanket, with her face buried in a book. She and his mother had grown close in a short time. They spoke on the phone daily, and his mother had even gotten her hooked on her romance books.

“Hey, I didn’t hear you come in.” Closing the book, she sat up on the couch. He walked in and took a seat next to her. “I was watching on television. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there.”

“Don’t worry, baby. How are you feeling?” he asked, his chest tight. He had rehearsed everything he wanted to say to her, but right now, his mind was failing him.

He wiped his hands on his pants and took her in. She was the most beautiful woman in the world to him. She was funny, intelligent, and everything about her made him want to be a better man.

For her.

“I’m good. Sofie stopped by and brought me some soup. It helped settle my stomach.” She grew sheepish and tossed the book onto the table next to the couch. “But I want to hear all about it. I’m sure there were tons of people there. I kept flipping through all the channels, trying to catch different versions. Was Jaxon there?”

He laughed. She was definitely feeling better. Her inquisitive nature was so damn cute. Half the time, she didn’t realize she was doing it. Questions would just flow from her lips. Her eyes would grow wide, and she’d get herself worked up from the excitement.

“I have plenty of pictures. And yes, Jax was there. It was amazing.”

“I’m so proud of you.”
