A woman barrels toward us, jet black hair down to the middle of her back swinging with each step.

“Talking to my new friend,” Blair responds coolly. “This is Jackson. Jackson, this is Mallory.”

“Travis is pissed, Blair. I swear there is actual smoke coming out of his ears.”

The girl at my side tilts her head upwards and sighs.

“B, let’s go. My feet hurt, I’m hungry, and I need at least three showers to wash away the stench of fried food and grime from my body.” Her friend looks toward me. “No offense.”

“None taken.” I respond, my eyes still on Blair.

Blair doesn’t move, even when her friend begins to tap her foot impatiently.

“I’m not ready to leave, Mal. I haven’t ridden a single ride and I’ve had my eye on one of those foot-long corn dogs for hours.”

She may look like a princess, but this one has some fire to her.

I like that.

“You can’t be serious. The guys want Shake Shack and I’m not eating any of this shit here. Can we please just go?”

I watch the wheels spinning in Blair’s mind.

“Just go with them. My car is in the lot.”

Her friend’s head is seconds away from spinning on its axis like something from The Exorcist.

“I am not leaving you here, alone, with this weird dude. We have that party tonight, remember? We’re supposed to be going as angels! What the hell is going on with you, B?”

“No offense, right?” I ask, one corner of my mouth curled into a smirk. I allow the image of Blair dressed as a sexy angel to fill my mind.

“You know what? No. Full offense meant. Blair, let’s go!” When she doesn’t move from her position at my side Mallory lets out an exasperated groan. “When he kidnaps you, and you end up on the side of a milk carton, don’t fucking call me, B.”

With that, she storms off and leaves the two of us standing there.

“Should I be worried about getting kidnapped, Jackson? You mentioned a criminal record.”

I laugh. “Not at all, princess.”

I wait a few beats before speaking again.

“Unless you’re into that kind of thing.”

CHAPTER FOUR

blair

My entire body is blaring with alarm bells.

Somehow I feel both completely safe and in imminent danger with Jackson.

“It’s dark and quiet back here. I could snatch you up and take you. I doubt anyone would hear your screams over the rides.”

My mouth drops open, shock over his words written all over my face.

“That was a joke.”

I nod, but don’t close my mouth.
