I squirmed at the intense look in her eyes but couldn’t fault her for asking questions. As far as I knew, I was the only familiar to turn human. And the only one to be transferred to a new witch.

“It’s a long story.” I gave her a small smile and hugged the bag of clothes tighter.

“Why don’t we get you ready, and you can tell us your story as we go, if you’re comfortable of course?” Naomi suggested.

“Now that I’ve had a look at you, I think we have the perfect outfit for tonight.” Natasha held out her hands, and I passed her the bag back. She flicked through a few things before pulling out and unraveling a long, thin, grass-green dress. “Here. This is it.”

“Oh, I’m not sure. It looks tight, and I don’t have a bra.”

“No bra needed.”

“But my n-nipples …”

“Will be free. As the goddess intended.”

“Trust us. We know.”

I found myself ushered into the bathroom, holding the dress. When the door closed behind me, I sighed and succumbed to their desires, taking off my baggy clothes and pulling the dress on over my head.

I cast a glance in the mirror, and while the color suited me more than some of Winnie’s clothes, my nipples were indeed free, poking through the fabric, which clung to my body like a second skin.

You look like a lady of the night. My mother’s cruel voice echoed in my head, and I flinched.

No. No. I look modern. And … and pretty. So go away. You’re dead, and your opinions don’t matter.

I exited the bathroom to cheers from the girls. Natasha called, “I knew it! It looks great on you.”

“Very pretty, Clawdia.” Naomi nodded her approval, curls bouncing around her face.

“Come sit here, Clawdia. Let us do your hair and makeup while you have a drink and tell us your story.” Karin guided me to the chair at the table, which now had a glass of white wine on it as well as a multitude of makeup items.

Is all this necessary for me?

Natasha started combing my hair the moment I sat down. “Would you let me cut your hair, Clawdia? Maybe darken it and add some highlights? It would look so lovely, and I don’t get to play hairdresser very often.”

“Darken? I’m not sure.”

“You don’t have to, but I think it would look great.”

I paused. “Do we have time to do that?”

“Of course. We have a potion here for hair color. It’s easy.”

A potion? Why did Winnie always do it with boxes she bought from the store, then?

Naomi rifled through bags and pulled out a jar. “Here it is.”

I stared at the jar but decided to be brave. “Why not? I didn’t get to do anything exciting with my hair when I was human.”

The twins squealed and did a little dance that made me laugh. Natasha gathered all my hair in one hand and took the jar Naomi passed her. “You won’t regret this, Clawdia. I promise.”

Karin picked up the glass on the table and handed it to me. “Here, try this wine. It’s my favorite. I think you’ll love it.”

“Thank you.” I took a sip, rolling the sweet flavor around in my mouth before swallowing.

I was shocked at how much I enjoyed the beverage. After my father’s predilection for alcohol, I stayed far away from it. But I didn’t want my past weighing me down. Not my mother’s scathing opinions, nor my father’s drinking or Mr. Jenkins’s abuse.

Just as Zaide said, this body has never been touched by any of them, and I won’t poison it with the fears my mind produces. I want to be stronger than that.
