Charlie summarized as Zaide moved to block Laurence’s view of my body. “This is their soul mate. He just collapsed out of the weirdest portal ever, and now we are all panicking. You might want to check the protector.”

Laurence paused for a moment, staring at Baelen’s fangs poking out from his mouth. “He’s a vampire?”

“Half akari,” Zaide corrected.

“Let’s get him to the treatment center and check the protector too,” Laurence ordered, and we sprang into action, Zaide lifting Baelen with ease and striding toward the door. Laurence coughed. “You’re naked.”

I looked down at myself. My skin was still rosy from the pleasure and dewy with sweat and cum dried on the inside of my thighs. But I couldn’t bring myself to care. There were more important things than my nudity.

I dashed into the bedroom as Zaide handed Baelen to Laurence and quickly dressed. I didn’t wait for Charlie and Zaide to finish dressing before rushing out of the cabin to follow Laurence to the treatment center.

As it turned out, the treatment center was an insult to the name. I’d seen better medical facilities in my past life in the 1920s. It was a slightly larger cabin than the one we’d been given, with three bedrooms, a bathroom, and an open-plan kitchen and living space.

The only reason I could see for it to be called a treatment center was the first aid kit on the kitchen cabinet as well as a few open cupboards showing syringes, needles, and other medical instruments.

An older gentleman stood up from the table as we entered. He took one look at Baelen and said, “I assume this is the reason for the wards fluctuating?”

“He has somehow managed to come through a portal and the wards here.”

“Place him in the spare bed.”

“He’s akari,” I warned.

The gentleman nodded and followed us into the tiny box room. “I have blood should he need it.”

Charlie and Zaide stormed into the cabin just as Laurence lowered Baelen to the bed.

“The protector is fine?” Laurence asked.

“As fine as he was an hour ago. He hasn’t been affected by this … being … portaling to our island.”

I tapped my foot impatiently in the doorway. Charlie and Zaide crowded around me as I watched the doctor examine Baelen.

His threads are green. He isn’t physically hurt, so checking him physically isn’t going to tell you anything. You should have machines to check his head where I can’t see,I angrily thought at the man’s bowed, bald head as he listened to the thumping of Baelen’s heart with a stethoscope.

Charlie must have felt me vibrating with rage, because he pulled me away. “Let’s leave the man to check him over.”

I shrugged him off. “I’m not leaving him.”

“Don’t get pissy with me.”

I glared at him. “Did you know he’d been attacked by shadows?”

His mouth fell open. “No, of course I didn’t.”

“You are always backing Zaide up.”

Charlie crossed his arms and sneered. “So you’d rather us be at each other’s throats. Is that it? Does this make you happy?”

“Let’s calm ourselves,” Zaide whispered and tried to move us out of the doorway.

“Zaide was trying to rescue your stubborn arse because you’d portaled yourself into the hands of an evil, magic-stealing bastard, was hit by a car on the way, and has been recovering since. When was he supposed to tell you he thought your soul mate may or may not be in danger? Danger you couldn’t save him from?” He leaned close to my face and hissed, “You’re not a stupid woman, Clawdia, so don’t act like it now.”

Tears filled my eyes, and my lip wobbled. Charlie’s fierce expression crumbled as I let out a sob. “I’m so sorry.”

“Oh, for—” Charlie pulled me into his arms and patted my back. “It’s fine. Enough with the waterworks.”

I pulled out of his arms and threw myself at Zaide. “I didn’t mean to be so angry. I don’t know—”
