She saw him flinch, but then his face broke out into a breathtaking smile. “Thank you, you don’t know how much those words mean to me. You already are the best mommy our little one could have asked for.”

“Thank you.”

“Mouse?” Christian asked.

“Thirty seconds.”

“Time for you to go. Thank you for trying to save her.”

“Not going anywhere.”

“If you don’t run now you won’t make it.”

“Said I almost got it.”

“Kiss me, Christian.”

“Run at ten,” he said to Mouse. Then his lips found hers, and he was kissing her with every bit of love he felt for her branded in his touch.

Lila let go of everything else. The pain, the fear, the regrets. All that mattered was that she had found her soul mate and he loved her enough to give his life to be with her until the end.

The world around them faded.

Then all of a sudden she heard a smug chuckle. “Told you no one was dying today.”

Christian pulled back, eyes wide. “You did it?”

“Eleven seconds to spare,” Mouse replied.

“I … I’m not … going to … die?” Lila asked, wary of believing what she was hearing.

“Not on my watch,” Mouse said, moving in front of her and grinning.

A slow smile slid over Christian’s face, then he dragged his teammate in and hugged him hard. “I owe you everything. Thank you for saving her.”

“Don’t mention it,” Mouse replied, slapping Christian’s back.

“We need to …” Christian turned then froze. “You guys didn’t leave?”

“Live as a team, die as a team,” Bear said.

“And no one was dying here today,” Arrow added.

“Thank you.” Christian’s voice was thick with emotion, and tears blurred Lila’s vision.

These men had risked their very lives to stay with her and Christian. How could she ever thank them enough for that?

“Let’s get her down,” Arrow said.

Christian moved to stand in front of her again, one arm around her waist, while the guys made quick work of breaking the chains binding her. Once she was free, he swung her into his arms and knelt, gently lowering her to the floor.

“Get this thing off her,” Christian said, and she felt his hands tugging at the vest.

Someone helped him remove it, then she was laid down flat on the concrete. People moved about her. Someone lifted her head and slipped something soft beneath it, she was covered in a blanket. Her vitals were checked, her ankle probed, and the prick on the back of one of her hands told her an IV was being started.

Through it all she felt fingers curled around her own.

Christian.
