“I know you don’t believe me, but I do love Lila, I always have. Don’t let my wife hurt her. Please,” Ross whispered brokenly.

There was no way he was letting anyone harm a hair on Lila’s head.

It was time to go get his woman.

November 22nd

2:36 P.M.

Lila cried out as she tripped on something and went down hard on her hands and knees.

Her ankle was a burning, throbbing mass of agony and she wasn’t sure she could get back up on it even if she wanted to.

And she wanted to.

She wanted to put as much distance between herself and the house as she possibly could. There was a part of her mind that recognized the further she went the harder it would be for Christian to find her, but there was some primal part, some flight or fight part, that was compelled to keep moving.

Distance equaled safety.

That was all her mind could cling to.

The compulsion to keep moving was strong, stronger than she could control right now. So even though her body was weak and exhausted, running on nothing but fumes, Lila pushed up until she was standing.

Gritting her teeth, she cautiously placed her bad foot on the ground, but as soon as it bore her weight it collapsed.

Another cry fell from her lips as the pain in her ankle intensified until it was almost unbearable.

Still, she had no choice but to bear it.

Tears blurred her vision, and she sank to rest against the cold ground. The sticks and rocks were scratchy against her cheek, but she barely registered it. Her whole body was one painful, uncomfortable, exhausted mess. A little more discomfort was nothing.

It would be so nice to close her eyes, sleep, and let everything else fade away.

Rest.

Just for a moment.

She was so tired.

Lila had already started drifting off, her wiped-out body almost completely drained of energy.

It was only fear that made her stir.

What if Christian’s team didn’t arrive in time?

What if Zara’s guards killed him?

What if they were already out here searching for her?

There was no way she was going back there. She wasn’t going to let Zara kill her, using her as a prop for her twisted plans. Nor was she going to be used as a prop in her games of revenge against Alpha Team.

She wasn’t going to die out here in Switzerland. Wasn’t going to lose her baby and the man she loved.

Not going to happen.

But it seemed highly unlikely that she was going to be able to walk any further.
