Cradling the back of her head in his hand to support it, he eased her back against his chest. “It’s all right, sweetheart, I have you.”

As though his words were all she needed to hear to know she was safe enough to let go, Lila slumped against him as she passed out.

Nothing about this situation was good. Lila was hurt and exhausted, Zara and Ross could be nearby with some of their men hunting them. His team may or may not have been killed in an explosion but either way he was cut off from them.

For now, it was just the two of them alone out here, and as Surf gathered Lila into his arms and stood, he vowed he would do whatever it took to get her home safely.

Nothing else was acceptable.

November 18th

1:32 A.M.

Cold.

Pain.

Dark.

Thoughts flitted through Lila’s mind, but they felt disconnected.

Snippets here and there, but nothing coherent.

Jostling.

Something hard shoved into her stomach.

Bouncing.

Lila drifted in and out of consciousness.

Unaware exactly where she was or what was happening.

She was so tired.

Still.

Cold.

Pain.

Something pressed against her head making it scream in agony.

A soft voice murmured soothingly, and she found that the sound of it calmed her enough that she slipped away again.

Cold.

Shivering.

Shakes wracked through her in an unrelenting stream. No matter what she did, she couldn’t make them go away. They came at her one after the other until her aching muscles felt stiff and tight.

Then something warm curled around her. A voice whispered in her ear. Lips touched her temple.

Once again she felt safe, and as heat slowly infused her and her shaking tapered off, Lila finally fell into a deep sleep.

The next thing she knew she was blinking open heavy eyes, her mind felt clearer, and she could see again. The dark wasn’t completely gone, but instead of being heavy and black now it was lighter and gray.
