I nod, looking up to find that she hashopein her eyes. She wants this for me--I think everyone does.

And so do I. I'm getting more and more confident of that by the second.

"You have to tell us everything," Tasha says with a grin. "When did you propose? I thought she was engaged--"

"She was...and she found out her fiancé was cheating on her," I say. "And then we uh..."

I glance back at Lyra, who's always listening toeverything.

"Wegot together," I say slowly. "And I kind of proposed on the spot?"

"When did you even have time to get a ring?"

"I...didn't," I admit.

Tasha gasps.

"No," she says.

"What?" I shrug. "I didn't have time, it kind of happened on the spot--"

"An impulsive proposal?" Dad says over his shoulder from where he's standing at the stove. "Bad news, Finn. Bad, bad news."

"Not that we disapprove," Mom says. "Tasha got engaged quick--so did your dad and I, back in the day. But you've gotta do it right!"

"Wine," Dad adds. "A nice dinner. You get down on one knee and you treat that girl right, you don't just...spring a proposal on her in the spur of the moment."

"The two of you have had such a long history," Tasha says. "She deservesromance."

"Hey," Chance chimes in from the living room. "Sometimes you just fall in love and you get carried away...I think I told you I wanted to marry you after a fewdays, didn't I?"

"A few days of..." Tasha looks at Lyra, thinking better of finishing that sentence.

But Lyra's already onto her. "A few days of what, mama?"

"Nothing, sweetie," Tasha says with a barely suppressed laugh. "But Chance is right. Sometimes we say things without thinking them through."

"Wow, thanks," I chuckle.

"...andnow I want to know how we can help," Tasha continues. "Let us help you make this special--for youandJenny."

"Well," I say. "I thought I would start by asking if I could have grandma's ring."

My mom's eyes widen. "Of course," she says softly, getting up from her perch at the kitchen island and disappearing down the hall. A moment later, she returns with a small velvet box. She hands it to me, and I open it carefully.

The ring inside is a simple, elegant design. A thin gold band with a small diamond in the center, flanked by two even smaller diamonds. It's not fancy--and it's tiny compared to the sparkling engagement band Steven gave her--but I somehow think she'll love it more than the one he offered.

It's moreher--subtle and sweet and perfect.

"Thanks, Mom," I say, tucking the box into my pocket. "I appreciate it."

"What else can we do?" Tasha asks, looking around the room for suggestions.

I think for a moment. "Well, I was thinking of taking her out to the Snowcap for dinner, then walking around the park...and that's where I'll pop the question. When I thought about it as a kid, that's always where I pictured it because we had our first kiss there--"

"Aw," Tasha coos. "That's adorable that you imagined it as a kid!"

"Anyway," I continue. "It's not anything fancy or elegant, but I just...I think it's good forus. It's honoring what we've built over the years--and how excited I am to get to know who she is today, to keep getting to know her."
