I react before I can stop myself. "No fucking way. And leave you date-less to your best friend's wedding?"

"Take it easy on him," she says, shaking her head. "He's doing really important work."

"What could be more important than hanging out with your fiance?" I ask.

"Treating kids with malaria...?"

I stop short. "I...I legitimately can't tell if you're kidding."

She looks up at me with the most serious expression I've ever seen.

Then she starts laughing.

I laugh with her, shaking my head. "Damn, you made me feel like a real asshole for a second there."

"I mean, you were kind of being one, but it's cool," she says. "He's a good guy, I promise. And heisdoing some really important stuff--vaccine research in South America. Like, hero level shit."

"Wow," I say, dragging out my vowels. "Hero level shit. Strong words."

"That's what it is," she shrugs. "I just lucked out and ended up with him."

I nod, a little miffed at the way she says it. Her words make it sound like she doesn't deserve him.

She deserves the world.

"Yeah, I guess you did," I shrug. "He's a lucky guy too, though. You're stunning tonight."

Not just tonight. Last weekend too, at the farmer's market in a sundress and hat...

Her cheeks flush pink, and I can tell she's a little flustered. "Thanks, Finn. You look...well, honestly, you look the same as always."

I scoff. "Hey--I'll have you know I picked out this t-shirt and jeansspecificallyfor the occasion."

"Right," she giggles. "Consider me corrected."

I chuckle, feeling more confident as the conversation continues. "So, since we're both dateless, does that mean we're stuck with each other for the night?"

She grins, her eyes sparkling. "I guess so. Just like prom, right?"

I feel a surge of warmth in my chest at her words. "Just like prom."

We finish walking into the venue together, a big barn decked out in twinkling lights and flowers. There's no music playing as they're still setting up for the evening, and I can hear the sound of women chatting upstairs. That must be Sam's wedding party, confirmed when I hear my sister's voice among them.

"Well...that's my cue," Jenny says. "I'll see you at the ceremony, huh?"

My pulse leaps at the suggestion, and I get this image ofherwalking down the aisle. I try to bat away the intrusive thought, but it sticks even though it isn't me she'll be walking down that aisle to.

"Yeah," I say. "I'll see you there."

She turns to go, but I catch her by the wrist.

It's like sparks shoot between our hands.

"Sorry," I say, jerking my hand away. "Uh...I just--"

"What?" she asks. "I'm running a little late. I should really head upstairs."

"I was just gonna say again how glad I am you're home," I say.
