“Yeah, I wasn’t expecting it.” I shake my head, thinking back about how the conversation went.

“Does it make you feel sad? How it all went down back then when it didn’t have to be that way.”

“I do, but what can I do about it?”

She sighs. “I’m sorry, Em. You still have feelings for him, don’t you?”

I glance at her in the dresser mirror. “Is it obvious?”

“Only to me.”

“Do you think I did the right thing asking him to dinner?”

“I think there are things you have to say, so yes. I’m sure he has things too.”

“Could be an interesting night,” I say, continuing to get ready.

It’s not like I’m trying to knock his socks off… but when he walked into his mom’s kitchen this morning, my heart did backflips.

“You’re going to be fine,” Maddie tells me when I put the final touches to my makeup. I’m nervous as hell, so it sure doesn’t feel like it.

“What about that double date coffee thing with his friend Ashton?”

She laughs, biting her lip. “I’d love nothing more than to be out and about with two of Seattle Hawks’ greats.”

I laugh now and shake my head. “You still don’t know one damn thing about the game.”

“A girl can improvise.”

“Well, you still have a few days left so I can see what the vibe is tonight.”

“Sounds good.” She might go for it, even though she really isn’t the kind to get hooked on some hockey pro who lives in another state. She’s still a mile a minute, but she’s also a little work crazy and hasn’t been on the dating scene for a while.

I finish getting ready, wearing a tightish black dress that compliments my figure. My hair is loose around my shoulders, and I curled the ends.

I’m so nervous. I can’t believe this is finally happening.

“You sure you can entertain yourself with my parents while I’m out?” I muse, when I have mom’s keys in my hand and I’m ready to leave.

Maddie laughs. “Of course. Anyway, it gives me an excuse to catch up on work.”

“You’re supposed to be on vacation, remember?”

She shrugs. “Hey, I don’t wanna fall behind. I’ll just be checking a few emails and my listings.”

I laugh and shake my head. “You can’t help yourself!”

Once I say goodnight to mom and dad, I head out into the night. There’s a light breeze but not too cool.

I type into my GPS the restaurant, since it’s been a while since I was on home turf.

I sail through downtown swiftly. I’ve been trying desperately not to think about the conversation I had with Gillian, and the fact she hasn’t spoken to him about it yet. I wonder if she told him after I’d left.

I hope that he’s going to be okay with coming tonight if that’s the case.

He hasn’t messaged me to say otherwise.

I know it’s not a date, but I sure as hell can feel the butterflies all the way down to my stomach. It’s all very nerve-wracking.
