“You know how food can be at those things,” she said, waving her hand dismissively, glad to have something to focus on after that phone call.

“Fair enough,” Tristyn conceded, closing the pizza box. “What kind of function was it?”

She took a bite to give herself time to come up with a plausible lie. “A meet and greet for one of the males I’m with. He’s pretty high up in his field. I was his plus one in a way.”

“His plus one? You mean his date?”

“No, I wasn’t his date. That was someone else. I was just there. In the background.”

“In the background?” he repeated. “Are you telling me he took you with him while he was on a date with another?”

“Kind of. It’s really hard to explain.”

“I don’t think you could provide me a good enough explanation in the end anyway,” Tristyn said, reaching for the agaveheart bottle.

Tessa laughed as she opened the pizza box to get another slice. “And tell me, Tristyn…”

“Blackheart.”

Tessa snorted a laugh. “That is not your surname.”

“Swear to the Fates.”

“Well, Tristyn Blackheart, what would an outing with you look like?”

“Pizza and agaveheart. Obviously.”

She huffed another laugh. “Idiot.”

“And if I wanted a proper date?”

Her smile fell. “That wouldn’t be possible.”

“Because of the bodyguards?”

“One in particular.”

“The one who wants to be with you.”

“Yes.”

“But you don’t want to be with him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because—” She paused, trying to figure out where to even start. “It’s complicated,” she finally said.

“So I hear.”

She could just make out his faint smirk.

“You could still give me your number. Just in case,” he added.

Tessa stilled. She didn’t even know the phone number that was connected to the phone Theon had given her.

“I’m leaving in a few hours, and you’re not from here either,” she said, forcing a bright smile to her face. “It’s not like we could arrange such an outing anyway.”
