“Shit,” I complained. I was craving Penny’s food today.

“Fuck her, bro. Let’s go. The Reading Nook belongs to an old lady, and no rich, rude bitch will keep us from one of our places,” Slate stated, and I nodded.

We crossed the road and walked into the Reading Nook. As usual, it was crowded with lunchtime readers all eating and reading books they’d no doubt just bought. Zoe was at the till, and I craned my neck to see Sin.

Penny came out from the kitchen.

“Where’s Sin?” I asked, concerned.

“She’s taken a customer down to the Vault. Reid is already down there, so it’s okay. Do you want your usual?” Penny quizzed.

“Please,” I almost begged the woman. Penny made huge, meat-filled samosas that were fuckin’ heaven, and I couldn’t get enough of her English sausage rolls. The pastry was all golden and flaky, and the meat inside wonderfully spiced. And there was always carrot cake or red velvet for Rage. I knew Slate loved Penny’s English pork pies, and he had a burrito, no matter what.

“I’ll get your order ready, boys. There’s one for the clubhouse if you can deliver?” Penny asked.

“Sure, anything for you,” Slate said and dropped a kiss on Penny’s head. She blushed slightly, gave us both a quick hug, and rushed out back. A growl came from behind, and we turned and caught Texas sitting at his usual table with a plateful of food, and he glowered at us.

“Penny kissed us!” Slate grinned and darted away before the big man could pound him. I followed swiftly after him as Texas set his gimlet gaze on me. Yeah, I put my hands up, not willing to argue with him. On the pretence of seeking Sin, I walked away and headed for the Vault. I didn’t need her, but it was far better than the dark look I was getting.

“I like that,” I overheard a soft voice, and Sin replied.

“Yeah, it is something special. I found it inspirational.”

“I see why. Does it come with a frame?”

“Yes. We have some that would fit it perfectly. If you’d like to buy it, I’ll have to call someone down to open the case with me. Because of the value of the items, we never open a locked item alone,” Sin explained.

“Oh,” the woman with Sin gasped. “I can understand that. Who’s saying I wouldn’t smash you over the head and make a run for it?”

“Exactly,” Sin agreed dryly.

I stepped forward.

“Would I do?” I asked as Sin greeted me with a beautiful smile. Damn, Jett was a lucky fucker. No wonder he kept knocking Sin up.

“Of course,” Sin said. “This is Julie. She’s going to buy the eighteenth-century love poem I recently got.”

No way. That blasted woman had money to purchase one of Sin’s treasures? Then again, she owned a house opposite Gran, and that was worth seven figures.

“Julie,” I grunted as her eyes widened.

“Gauntlet,” she stuttered, blushing red.

“Wanna get this out, Sin, in a bit of a rush, babe,” I said, and now Sin was interested. She looked between us and cocked an eyebrow as she unlocked the display case and donned a pair of gloves. Sin carefully opened the lid and took the poem out. It was a pretty piece of work; beautiful pictures were around the border of the poem, and someone had clearly put effort into it.

“Would you let me into the Vault so I can frame it?” Sin asked, and I nodded. Ever since she’d settled into MC life, Sin had allowed all officers access to the Vault in case something happened. But since the war, Sin had given all members of Rage access to the bulletproof vault. Reid was inside but had headphones on. I made a mental note to have a quiet word. Anything could have happened to Sin, and Reid wouldn’t have heard shit.

“Sure, honey, do your thing,” I said gently, and Sin offered a smile as I approached the vault. Sin was no longer skittish around the brothers, and Jett and Sin’s fights were legendary. Sin had a potty mouth when she got going.

“How’s twatwaffle today?” I asked and received a scowl.

“Twatwaffle thinks I can’t drive my car anymore, and we had a fight over me bringing the children to HQ. He’s not getting a blowjob for two weeks,” Sin announced.

I heard a snort of amusement from Julie but ignored her as I slapped my hand to the scanner and bent for my retina scan. The final security measure was my voice. The door swung open, and Sin swept inside.

“Wow, I need a safe room like that,” Julie muttered, and my curiosity peeked. Why would she want a top-of-the-range security system and panic room? I shoved curiosity down ruthlessly. Not my problem. Sin bustled out a few minutes later as we waited in awkward silence. She smiled brightly, her keen eyes looking between Julie and me, and I knew the old ladies’ gossip train would soon be in motion.

Julie and I ignored each other as Sin swept her to the cash drawer to pay. I wandered aimlessly, monitoring a guy studying some of the items on display. Sin would always showcase a few pieces, but they were in alarmed cases. This idiot showed too much interest in what appeared to be a book and its case.
