“Maybe I’ll catch you later, Parker?” Aaron says, for once making eye contact with my eyeballs instead of my chest.

Maybe he has three brain cells.

“I don’t think so,” Logan says smoothly. Calmly. Politely. But there is an edge of a threat underneath his words.

Silly me, I never thought hearing a man threaten someone could be sexy. It absolutely is. It is thesexiest.

“Surely, you could spare Parker for one dance,” Aaron says with a sneer.

“I don’t share,” Logan says, and the rough edge to his voice makes my insides quiver. “But the choice is not mine to make.”

I think of Logan’s words earlier, how he said I’m not a pawn. His protectiveness combined with his respect for me is like the ultimate gold standard for men.

It is in this moment that I realize I might be a little bit in love with my fake boyfriend.

“Parker,” Logan says with deliberately slow enunciation, “do you want to dance with this person?”

Not even a little bit.“No, thank you.”

I almost expect Aaron to say something about what his father or my father will have to say about this, but he doesn’t. He just disappears into the crowd. Hopefully to never return.

I count to five, taking in a long, deep breath before I turn around. What I don’t do is step back, and neither does Logan. This means we are really, really close. Most definitely girlfriend close.

Or … fake girlfriend close?

“Would you like to dance?” Logan asks.

“I would like nothing more,” I say, not even caring a little how desperate this might sound. After all the things Logan just did and said, forget restraint. What’s the point?

With a devastating smile, Logan places his hands on my waist. I wrap mine around his neck and relax into him. It was a close call, but Ed Sheeran was spared. I’m glad because I wasn’t at all looking forward to removing his songs from my playlists after Aaron ruined his music forever.

The trimmed hair above Logan’s collar bristles against my fingertips and I find myself sliding my fingers up his scalp. Might as well milk this moment for all it’s worth.

“Thanks for rescuing me,” I say. “I thought I lost you.”

“I couldn’t escape Larry. He needed to parade me around like his personal show pony.”

I make a face. “Ugh. Larry. I’m sorry. I didn’t do a very good job at being your glue.”

“I don’t plan to let you go again,” Logan murmurs close to my ear. “This time, I’ll beyourglue.”

“Okay,” I say, listening to the steady thump of his heartbeat. “I can live with that.”

The reality is that after the brief time we’ve spent together tonight, I’m not sure I can livewithoutit.

Sorry, Logan. You might have intended to be one-night-only glue, but you’re actually the forever kind. A new, lab-tested and irreversibly permanent glue.

“Is this appropriate dance touching?” Logan asks, and I laugh.

“Yes.” I chew the inside of my cheek until I’m sure I won’t blurt out that I’d happily settle for somethinglessparent’s birthday party appropriate.

I’m surprised how smooth Logan is. Even though this is just a slow dance, he’s doing more than swaying. And if I didn’t know any better, I’d say he’s enjoying himself. Not as much as I’m enjoying it, obviously.

Logan smirks. “You’re not secretly filming this for social media, right?”

“That you know of.”

His piercing green eyes lock on mine. “There’s something to be said for just living in the moment. Not filming it. Not posting it. Not sharing it.”
