“I get that a lot.”

His smile fades, and he studies me. I resist the urge to smooth down my hair or run my tongue over my teeth.

“Your dad won’t like me going with you,” Logan says, finally.

I frown. “Dad always liked you.”

Didn’t he? I honestly can’t remember a single interaction between Dad and Logan. Mostly because my dad, despite being overly controlling, was rarely around.

Mom liked Logan. I know that. But why would Logan think my dad didn’t like him?

“No,” Logan says firmly. “He really didn’t. And now, neither does Brandon. I’m assuming he’ll be there?”

I nod, spinning my ring. “Maybe it will be a good thing? Y’all can clear the air and catch up?”

Logan’s face indicates he doesn’t agree.

Mia appears beside the table. “Hey, Logan. Good to see you again. I’m Mia, in case you don’t remember after you left town without saying goodbye to anyone.”

Speaking of not going easy.

I give Mia a look. She only shrugs.

Logan drops his hand from my arm—I miss it the moment he does—and shakes Mia’s outstretched hand with an amused smile. “I remember you,” he says, getting to his feet. “Good to see Parker has you to keep her out of trouble.”

Mia takes back the stool Logan just vacated, shooting me a grin. “Keeping her out of trouble is too high a bar. I’m mostly just trying to keep her out of jail.”

I cover my face with my hands. “I hate both of you.”

“You love us,” Mia says.

I shoot her a pointed look, because there is no good reason for her to mention the L-word in front of Logan. That’s even worse than me talking about boobs and marriage! Mia is incurring some serious fines tonight for violating terms of our friendship agreement.

Logan brushes a hand over my shoulder in a way that sends a thrill zipping down my spine. Then he leans down, his lips right next to my ear. That same feeling now shoots back up and makes my heart feel like it’s going to burst.

“I’ll call you soon to discuss our upcoming date.”

I can’t move for a solid ten seconds after Logan disappears, like his whispered words carried some kind of paralyzing agent, leaving me rooted in place.

Mia can’t stop smiling, watching me while she sips her wine. “Seems like that went well. I take it he said yes?”

“He did.”

“And how are those lines? Crisp and clear? Because from a purely observational standpoint, they seemed a little blurry to me.”

“Shut up.”

“I wonder how the other guys on the team will feel about this.”

My eyes go wide. I didn’t eventhinkabout the fact that so many of the Appies are right across the room. Watching me and Logan. Making who knowswhatkind of assumptions. Probably preparing a host of creative threats and punishments for Logan if he does anything to hurt me.

Working for the team is like acquiring a whole roster of protective older brothers. I may not have dated much since I’ve worked for the Appies, but I have no doubt if I did, the guy would have to deal with a whole slew of threats.

I already have areal, overprotective brother. Brandon is bad enough. And he willhatethe idea of me bringing Logan to the gala. You know, because of the whole ten-year-grudge thing. I’m honestly surprised Dad hasn’t told him yet. I’d know if he had because Brandon would be calling me in an instant to yell.

Mia takes another sip of wine, watching behind me. “Interesting.”

“What are they doing?”
