Page 17 of Just Don't Fall

The momentum sends us both flying right into the tiny vestibule. Logan and I land in a tangle of limbs at the bottom of the steep staircase.

I don’t register the pain at first. Just the delicious weight of Logan’s body on mine. He somehow managed to slide a hand underneath my head before it hit the floor.

Hockey reflexes, man. Not a thing to be trifled with!

Logan’s breath flutters over my cheek, and I feel the light scratch of his stubble on my jaw.

Dear door, I was wrong to reprimand and criticize you. You have given me this beautiful gift, and I shall forever be grateful.

“Are you okay, Parker?” Logan sounds worried, but also like he’s as breathless and affected by this as I am.

Affected by the fall, probably. Not by the way our bodies fit together so well. Whereas that is ALL I can think about.

Better enjoy it! This will be the only time ever.

“I’m fine?” I say, far more question than statement.

“Are you sure?”

“No?”

He chuckles, which sends a delicious shiver through me. Because Ifeelthe rumble of the laughter as his chest vibrates against mine.

He starts to shift, and I want to whine as his weight lifts off me. “I have to be crushing you,” he says.

“I’m good,” I say.Reallygood. To cover up JUST in case he can hear my thoughts and know that I never, everwant him to move, I add, “You’re feeling a little light there, Barnes. Maybe we need to increase your caloric intake. Get the trainer to help pack some more muscle on you.”

“I guess you’d know better than anyone.” I can hear the smile in his voice.

“I would?”

“You’re currently feeling up my abs.”

I’mWHAT?

While I’ve been focused on things like Logan’s hand cupping the back of my head and his stubble on my cheek, somehow I missed the very pertinent fact that my hand snuck its way underneath his shirt like a little thief.

And my hand is not passively resting on butactively strokinghis six pack. Or is it eight? Definitely an eight-pack.

I jerk my hand away and immediately try to wiggle out from under Logan. “I am so sorry! It must be … an involuntary reaction.”

He shifts his weight, allowing me to scoot away and sit up, my back against the stairs. I keep my head down, hiding behind my hair. Because I cannot face the man whose abs I just groped like some kind of ab-groping weirdo.

“Your hand involuntarily performs abdominal exams?” Logan asks, barely keeping the laughter out of his voice.

“Yep.”

“So, you’ve done this to every guy on the team?”

Exasperated, I blow out a breath and finally hazard a glance his way. He’s sitting up too now, watching me with a teasing glint in his green eyes.

“Just another part of my job,” I say, trying my best to feign some semblance of calm.

“You mean aperkof the job?”

“Nope. Definitely not a perk. You have no idea how taxing it is,” I say, rolling my eyes. “So many six packs, so little time.”

He laughs, and my whole torso hums with a kind of deep, deep pleasure I rarely feel. Because Logan doesn’t laugh much. Or hedidn’t. I can only think of a few times I’ve heard this sound. It’s so rich and full that I want to grab my phone and record it so I can listen again and again.
