“I couldn’t have been supernaturally bound to a better host.” He winked.

I laughed and shook my head at that comment. “All right. Listen. Clearly, you don’t want to be told what to do. I understand that. That’s… the whole reason I came to Chicago in the first place. So I promise I won’t use that over you. I won’t give you orders, and if I do it by accident, tell me, and I’ll rescind them. But in return, I need you to be careful. If you need to cause chaos, do it in small doses that don’t scare people, or do it here for Kelly and me.”

He slowly pulled his hand back. “That’s a generous offer, and I’d be unwise not to accept it.”

“All right.” I was pretty sure that meant he agreed. “And one more thing… I want you to try to find a way to break this bond. Not because I hate it and I want you gone, that’s not it, but… like you said. You’re in danger if you have to follow me everywhere. Staying in one place puts a target on your back. And now that Jackson knows you’re here, I don’t want you in any danger. All right?”

He hesitated for a moment before nodding again. “Very well. I’ll begin looking into it to see what I can find.”

“Good.” I relaxed against the door and smiled slightly. “You know, I never thought running for your life could actually be kind of fun.”

He chuckled and nodded. “It’s a very unique adrenaline rush. You grow to like it.” He winked.

I laughed. “I fucking hope not!”

Suldeargan grinned. “Don’t worry. You won’t have to run for your life while I’m around. This was an exception.”

“All right… I trust you,” I said to him.

He seemed suddenly surprised to hear that, but after a moment, his surprise was replaced with a sense of excitement. I was sure he didn’t hear that often.

But the strangest thing was that I did trust him. I wasn’t sure why or how, but… I knew that I did. And I hoped he felt like he could trust me too.

By the time Kelly got back with the groceries, I wasn’t really in the mood to talk about everything that had happened that day, so we just watched some movies in the living room while I tried to work on my resumé. I think she thought she was doing me a favor by keeping Suldeargan distracted. At least she was trying to help, I suppose. Really, he kept to himself that afternoon. He messed with a few things around the living room, but nothing major.

“Do you think you’ll be okay tonight?” Kelly asked around ten that night. “I can sleep with you again if you want.”

“I’ll be okay.” I smiled and hugged her. “Thank you.”

She sighed and hugged me back. “I need to apologize for today. Work was shit, so when I came home, I took it out on you. I got really lucky getting a job right away, and I’ve been taking that for granted. Take whatever time you need. I can’t imagine how hard this week has been on you, and I was a bitch today.”

“Hey, it’s alright.” I pulled back and smiled at her. “Honestly, I understand. There’s a lot of pressure on you now, too. I might panic if I was the only one with a job, too. If you start to feel frustrated, though, let’s try to talk about it instead of getting pissed at each other.”

“Thank you.” She gave me a grateful smile. “I don’t deserve you.”

I took her hand and squeezed it. “Do you want to talk about work?”

“No, it’s okay. I’m over it now.” She sighed. “It’s just that condescending dick of a manager and the two teenage sycophants he has working there. Plus, Saturdays are always busy. But we can talk about it some other time. I’m opening tomorrow, so I’m gonna go to bed. I love you.”

“I love you too.” I smiled as she kissed my head and got up to go to her room. When she was gone, I looked at Suldeargan beside me on the couch. “Thank you for being so… I feel like saying well-behaved makes you sound like an animal. I just mean thank you for, you know–”

“I know what you mean.” He chuckled. “It’s fine. Are you ready for bed?”

“Yeah, I think so.” I stood up. “You wait out here while I change.”

He laughed at that. “I don’t think so.”

I gave him a look and crossed my arms. “Excuse me?”

“I’m going to watch you change.” He smirked as he stood up. “Come on.”

“No, you are not.” I glared.

I went into my room and started to shut the door, but he had no trouble stepping in before I closed it. I rolled my eyes and went to my closet, grabbing a pair of silky pajamas. All of my normal, not-sexy pajamas were dirty from having company over all week, so this was all I had until I could do laundry tomorrow. “Fine. You stay here. I’m going to change in the bathroom.”

“You think I can’t block that door too?” He smirked, standing directly in my door frame so I couldn’t really leave.
