“Jennifer,” I said as I gestured that we leave the field. “Like Audrey said, she was very innovative... always coming up with new ways to get us tripping over ourselves,” I added with a chuckle.

“If she was so talented, why’d she leave the squad?” Tuesday said.

“She got pregnant.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah,” I said. “She hid it for as long as she could. But... well, with the skimpy little outfits we wear, it didn’t take long for us to notice a little bump.”

Without even mentioning it, I led the way to the Calculus Café. “They’ve got great sandwiches here,” I said as I pulled the door open to let her in.

“Calculus Café?” she said with a curious grin. “Do they make us solve a problem before serving us?”

I cocked a brow. “Actually, they sort of do.”

“You’re kidding,” she said with a pleasant giggle.

As we headed to the service counter, I pointed to the whiteboard on the far wall. “If you can solve that mathematical equation, you get free coffee for the year.”

She looked at the complex problem and shrugged. “Well, I’d better get my money out ‘cause there isn’t a way I’m going to solve that.”

I tapped her hand. “This one’s on me.”

She cocked her head to the side, an uncertain grin on her lips. “All right,” she said. “So long as you promise to let me get it the next time.”

“Promise.”

We ordered our sandwiches and herbal teas then went to the table by the monumental equation. I sat with my back to the white board while she sat facing it, clearly intrigued.

“I love this bread,” she said after her first bite.

“I told you they had great sandwiches.” I looked around the small café as we ate.

A couple sat by the window and four guys were at another table in the corner, quietly studying. Soft and relaxing music came from the speaker.

When I brought my gaze back to Tuesday, her eyes were on the equation behind me. Her lips moved slightly while her right index finger worked out the problem.

Smiling, I suspected that she was a lot smarter than she let on. The childlike face and sweet demeanor hid something much deeper.

As she took a sip of her tea, she noticed my gaze. Blushing, she smiled. “I can’t resist trying.”

“Sure. Have at it.”

She let out a tired sigh and ate her sandwich.

“Brook?” she said as she finished the last bite of her lunch.

“Yeah?”

“You do know that I haven’t officially made the cheerleading team yet, right?”

I smiled and nodded. “I kind of figured that you were in the audition phase.”

“I’m just saying that... well... I don’t want you to waste your time with me if I’m not good enough to ultimately make the squad.”

“Don’t worry,” I said. “I saw what you’re capable of. I have no doubt you’ll make the team. Besides, we have a big game come Saturday. We don’t have the luxury of time to find any others.”

“Did you have any problems making the squad?” she said.
