I let out a sardonic laugh. “No way. Playing this sort of game is way too stressful. Though they couldn’t tell, I was sweating bullets when I met up with the Hunters.”

“You’re their boss?” Bishop said.

“That’s what they think,” I said with a confirming nod. “And they have no reason to believe otherwise.”

Rector grunted his satisfaction then tilted his head back to look up at the ceiling. “What about Brook?”

Nodding, I grinned as I crunched on a few chips, waiting for Rector to look my way. It took him only three seconds to redirect his gaze at me.

“She has no clue what’s going on,” I finally said.

Rector smiled and gave me a thumbs up while Bishop looked at me and winked, his grin wide.

“Let’s give our girl something special then,” Rector said.

“Yeah,” Bishop smiled. “She’s suffered enough. It’s time to take care of her. Real good.”

Chapter 5

Brook

Lying on my bed staring at the ceiling, I replayed the moments before that explosive fire again and again. The practice, the pompoms, Tuesday’s insistence on going to get them. Then that sudden bang, then smoke... lots of smoke.

Poor Tuesday. I couldn’t stop thinking about her, what she’d been through, and the pain that I knew all too well would be with her for a long, long time.

There were days when my skin still tingled in an annoying manner. It itched and felt uncomfortably tight. That was what Tuesday had to look forward to.

I rolled onto my stomach and looked out the window. The sun was high and hot; a nice day for a stroll under the dense canopy of the trees that offered SAU just enough shade.

But I wasn’t in the mood for a stroll. I wasn’t in the mood to enjoy the sunny day. No. My head was caught up with the one persistent question.

Who? Who could have done such a horrible thing?

The question left me dizzy. The thought left me nauseas. Someone wanted me dead.

Again.
