“Hungry?” Rector said as he gestured to the large, double refrigerator.

I glanced at Bishop’s sandwich. “That sure does look good.”

“Help yourself,” Rector said. “You know your way around.”

I sure did. I couldn’t count the number of times we’d raided the refrigerator as kids. We’d constantly snuck in to grab ice cream, or cake or to make sandwiches of all kinds.

I took up his invitation and headed to the refrigerator and took a look inside. Just like when we were kids. It was well stocked with just about anything a guy could want to put in a sandwich. Roast beef, sliced turkey, smoked ham and salami. Cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, Monterey Jack and provolone. Dijon mustard, gourmet mayonnaise and rich, creamy butter.

My mouth watered as I pulled out the roast beef, Dijon mustard and cheddar.

On the counter was a selection of breads; kaiser, bagel, ciabatta and more.

“We were thinking of hanging out in the entertainment room,” Rector said. “Maybe catch a movie.”

“Sounds good,” I said as I built my sandwich.

“My father just put in a new sound system and the home theater is even better than before,” Rector said.

“What movie did you want to watch?” I said, surprised by how natural the question sounded.

We hadn’t seen each other in weeks and a part of me had begun to think that our relationship was over for good. But it felt good to be with them again, eating, laughing, and just horsing around.

“I’m in the mood for a horror flick,” Bishop said.

“You would,” Rector shot back. “I was hoping to sit back and enjoy a good thriller.”

“What about you, Deac?” Bishop said.

“I sure could go for a good laugh right now. Everything’s been such a downer lately.”

“Yeah,” Rector chimed in. “I could go for a good comedy.”

With my mile high sandwich ready to go, I put it on a plate, coupled it with a nice, crispy pickle and looked at the guys. “Ready... for whatever you guys have to throw at me.”

Bishop picked up what remained of his sandwich, and we all headed out to the entertainment room.

“Wow, man,” I let out as we entered the room that was a little bigger than I remembered. “You really have the theater thing down, don’t you.” I ran my hand over the back of one of the dozen leather recliners that were set up in front of the wall-to-wall screen.

Rector plunked down in one of the recliners, draping his long legs over the armrest. I took up the seat two chairs down while Bishop opted to stand as he finished his sandwich.

“So, what have you been up to since you got expelled?” I said as Rector busied himself looking for a good movie to watch.

“Been pretty busy working for my dad,” Rector said. “Actually, the timing couldn’t be better. The day I got expelled, my dad took me in. It’s been great. A real eye opener.”

“I bet it is.” I bit into my sandwich and let out a satisfied sigh. “Man, this is good.”

“We’re even going to be collaborating on a few things,” Bishop said.

“Oh?” I looked from Bishop to Rector. “How’s that?”

Rector shrugged. “We recently signed a deal with a big buyer. Overseas.”

“Sounds like a big deal,” I said.

“It is.”

“So big, in fact,” Bishop said, “my family has decided to get on board.”
