The next couple of days were a blur of confusion as I tried to piece the events together. After the fire, we’d been taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation,

Afterwards, I’d waited around hoping for news about Tuesday. By the end of the day, I left knowing little.

But the rumor mill churned.

“She’s badly hurt.”

“Three degree burns on her arm and face.”

“She’ll be in the hospital for a while still.”

“Will she make it?”

“She’ll be disfigured for sure.”

The campus buzzed with rumors and conjecture that grew more pessimistic by the day. The football game came and went without the cheerleaders performing. Despite Audrey’s sternness, she and the rest of the squad didn’t feel right about performing after what happened to Tuesday. For a couple of days, Tuesday was in intensive care, and no one could visit her. Finally, a week after the horrible fire, rumor had it that she was out of intensive care.

“Hello,” I said to the nurse at the desk. “A burn victim was brought in last week... Tuesday.”

Scowling, the nurse looked up at me. “It’s Friday, dear. Was she brought in last Friday. Or was your friend brought in last Tuesday?”

“She was brought in a week ago... her name is Tuesday,” I said, unable to hide my frustration.

The younger nurse beside her leaned over and smiled. “Tuesday is in room 314. She may not be awake. We’re keeping her sedated for the time being.”

“Can I go and see her anyway?”

“Sure. Go ahead.”

Zigzagging past patients, doctors and nurses who roamed the hall, I finally reached room 314. Pulling in a long breath, I steeled myself for what I would find in the room.

I walked into the well-lit room and saw her lying there, so tiny and still. Half her face was bandaged as was her left arm. From what I could see of her face, my heart fell. Her hair was singed off, and her face had melted. She was unrecognizable. She barely looked human.

Oh my God! So was so beautiful. Now her face...

“Tuesday?” I whispered. I tried to keep my voice calm and steady.

Don’t freak out.
