“Let’s do it.” She took his hand and led him upstairs to the en suite bathroom that he used. There was just enough room in the shower stall for both of them.

As the hot water cascaded over them, Jason kneaded her sore shoulders. She moaned, her forehead resting against the tiled wall of the shower stall. “I can’t believe how good that feels. I didn’t know I was so tense.”

“I knew as soon as I saw you. Your shoulders were up around your ears.”

“What about you? You must be sore too.”

“Nah, I got off easy. Donnie did the hard work up on the aerial. And I didn’t have a phone clamped to my ear all day.”

“I couldn’t find my earbuds.” She tilted her head so he could massage her neck with one strong hand. He knew just where to press to release the knots of tension. “You know where I eventually found them? In the freezer at the Blue Drake.”

She felt the satisfying vibration of his laughter against her back.

“Frozen earbuds aside, you did great today. The whole town is talking about it.”

“No, they’re talking about you,” she corrected. “I caught the headline in tomorrow’s Clarion.” Now that it was summer, the town’s newsletter had started publishing again, although nowadays it was digital only. “It says, Fire Chief Mosedale Faces and Aces First Big Test. They’re using that photo of you that everyone loves.”

“The one with Mrs. McMurray?”

“Yes, the one people are turning into a caption contest, making up things that she was saying to you.”

“All she said was ‘didn’t I give you a C in my English class?’” His lips against her ear made her shiver.

“Really? Because if you go online, you’ll find out that she said, ‘Are you single? My sixth husband just died.’”

He groaned and nibbled her ear lobe. “That’s dark.”

“Yeah, best to stay off the internet for a while. You’re a hot topic.” She felt his hand curve around one of her ass cheeks. She adored the way he cupped her back there, the way he openly appreciated every curve. When his hand dipped around front and stroked her wet folds, she shuddered into an immediate but gentle orgasm, like sliding down a mossy slope.

Afterwards, she leaned back against his chest and let the water sluice over her body. Every part of her hummed with contentment. If she could stay awake long enough, she was going to thank him for that sweet release in the best possible way.

“Did you decide about the wedding?” he murmured against her hair.

She had no idea what he was talking about. “Wedding?”

“Colleen and Lisa. I’m officiating. I asked if you’d be my date. You never exactly answered.”

“Oh. Well, I don’t even know when it is. They haven’t invited me. I don’t know either of them very well. Isn’t Colleen a few years older than us? And I’ve only chatted with Lisa a couple times at Alvin’s. She doesn’t drink, you know. She says no one wants their elementary school principal to be partying on the weekends. That is one dedicated lady. I’d think a school principal would need twice the alcohol.”

Her nervous babble didn’t do anything to distract Jason.

“You’d be my plus one.”

A plus one. That was serious, more serious than anything they’d done so far. It felt like a big step. Or was she overthinking it?

“Jason.” She turned within the circle of his arms. “Do we have to talk about this now?”

“Why not? Is it so hard to talk about?” His full lips set in stubborn lines, while the rest of his face just looked exhausted. Bloodshot eyes, deep grooves on either side of his mouth. They should be in bed, not arguing in the shower.

“Yes, it’s hard, because you’re changing the game on me.”

She stepped out from under the stream of water and pushed aside the shower curtain. Grabbing a towel, she gently pressed the water from her hair, then grabbed the body lotion that she’d stashed in his cabinet.

“I’m sorry,” she called to him. “All I’m saying is, let’s talk about it another time. I have other plans for tonight. See you in bed?”

She took his mumble as a ‘yes,’ and headed to the bedroom with her lotion. Before she got down to moisturizing, she checked her phone. A text from Dominic flashed on the screen.

“Lake Bittersweet in the news again? What are the odds? Looking good, K. Better than ever.”
