She was still lying partly on top of him, partly on the dock. He gathered her against him to cushion her from the wooden planks. She murmured something against his mouth, and eagerly fitted her body against his. What had she said? Did it matter? As long as neither of them was stopping, she could recite the Declaration of Independence for all he cared.

But the next time she murmured, he reluctantly dragged his mouth away from hers. “What?” he managed.

“You really know how to kiss.”

“You interrupted our flow for some commentary?” As the lust cleared from his vision, he laughed. He stroked his hands down her back, reveling in each delicious curve.

“Yeah, I’m annoying like that.” Her rueful tone made him think she’d gotten that complaint before.

“It’s not annoying. One thing about Kendra Carter, she’s always going to have something to say. And it’s always going to be worth hearing.”

Her eyes gleamed down at him, more dazzling than the panorama of stars behind her. “No wonder you get all the girls. You know just what to say.”

He didn’t respond to that, because it didn’t really sound like a compliment. Maybe it was one of the dreaded compli-sults. And besides, it wasn’t accurate. He was saying what he thought, what he knew to be true. Why did she have to turn it around on him like that?

“Sorry,” she murmured. “I don’t mean to make you sound like a man-slut. I know it’s not like that.”

“Good, because it’s really not like that. Even if I date a lot, it doesn’t always end up in bed or in a relationship.”

“It doesn’t?”

“No. I mean, you have to find out if the chemistry is there. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t. Then you have to find out if it’s going to be fun hanging out with someone or not. Usually, one of those things doesn’t pan out and we agree to not take it any further.”

She was quiet for a moment as she scanned his face. “So where do we fall?”

“How about we kiss some more and then have more commentary and decide?”

Her gorgeous smile flashed across her face. That smile could light up the entire lake. “Have you always been this funny? Never mind, don’t answer. You have. You always made me laugh. I used to think, it’s a good thing my locker is next to his because it helps me start the day off with a smile.”

“Awww. That deserves another kiss, don’t you think?”

“Okay, but that’ll be two. That’s how many I owe you. Anything more than that, you’ll have to work for.”

“I am up to that challenge.”

The next kiss, he didn’t start slow. None of the gentle brush of skin on skin. He dove deep right away, devouring her mouth, twining tongue against tongue, tasting, savoring, arousing. He felt her body move against his, a slow grind that brought his cock to immediate hardness. He’d been aroused the entire time, but that firm pressure of her hips made the blood surge into his erection.

Her breasts pressed against his chest. Full and generous, so close but so far, trapped behind her jacket and her top. If he could just…he slid his hand under her clothing and touched the smooth living satin of her skin. A silent sigh escaped him, an acknowledgement that this was where he’d longed to be for some time now.

Maybe ever since she’d gotten back from Minneapolis and he’d spotted her laughing with Gina Moretti in the pasta aisle of the grocery store.

Want. The emotion had flashed through his brain with no warning.

And now here he was, his hand sliding around the curve of her breast. He was breathing in the heady scent of her skin, savoring the pressure of her thigh against his bulge.

Want. More. He moved to fill his hands with her breasts, desperate to find her nipples, which perked against his palms with a quickness that thrilled him. His breath clogged in his throat and images cascaded through his brain. He wanted her clothes off, her breasts exposed to his greedy gaze, his mouth on her nipple—

A sound from somewhere out there, somewhere not in the intimate space between the two of them, snagged his attention.

Someone was on the lake. Yodeling? Catcalling?

He pulled away from her with a gasp and put his finger to her parted lips. “I think someone noticed us.”

“Do I even care?” she asked, adorably breathless.

“You will tomorrow. Especially if it turns out to be anyone from high school. Or Betty Bannister.”

“Is Betty everywhere?” She rolled off him. He sat up and squinted into the darkness. Except it wasn’t as dark as it should have been. Was that…fire?
