“Special Agent Jenkins, do you ever sleep?” Detective Schwope asked.

“Did you get the names of the people who came to Whitley’s house for the food bank meeting?”

“I did. She sent them about an hour ago.”

“Can you share that list with me?” Jenna asked, a buzz of adrenaline building inside.

“Looking for someone in particular?” Schwope asked. “Sending a photo of Mrs. Whitley’s handwritten list.”

Jenna clicked on the photo, enlarged it and skimmed through the names.

Second from the bottom was Trudy Waters.

Jenna’s heart beat faster.

“Jenkins, you still with me?” Schwope asked.

“I am,” she said as she swung her legs off the bed and grabbed her jeans. “All this time, we’ve been looking for a male janitor. What if the fake janitor was a female?”

“You got one in mind?” Schwope asked.

“Trudy Waters’ house,” she said. “I’m heading over there now.”

“I’ll get a police unit headed that way.”

“If Trudy has the baby, it’s highly likely she’s mentally unstable.” Jenna threw her T-shirt over her head and shot a glance toward Cliff.

Fully dressed in his jeans, T-shirt and boots, Cliff slung his shoulder holster over his shoulders and handed Jenna hers.

Grabbing their jackets, they ran for the door. Brutus barked and ran after them.

“Sorry, dude,” she said. With a more forceful tone and a stern look, she said, “Stay.”

The dog immediately sat back on his haunches and stared at Jenna.

“Good dog,” Cliff said.

Jenna held the door open.

Cliff darted through and ran for his truck while Jenna closed and locked the door.

He had the truck engine revved and the shift in reverse by the time Jenna hopped into the passenger seat.

Seconds later, they were speeding through town, heading for the edge of town where a newer subdivision had estates with one to five-acre lots. The Waters’ home was the furthest west, with a view of the mountains silhouetted by starlight in the distance.

As they neared the home, Cliff turned off the headlights and slowed to a stop well before arriving at the driveway. He parked in front of the home before the one they were aiming for, killed the engine and dropped down from his seat.

Jenna met him in front of the truck. As she stepped out, he grabbed her arm and swung her around, pulling her into a quick embrace.

“I just want you to know, I think you’re beautiful, smart, strong and sexy as hell. Some say when you know, you know. I know. When this is all said and done, I’m negotiating for the full Monty.” He claimed her lips in a quick, hard kiss. “I’m pretty sure I’m in love with you, Jenkins.”

When he released her, she hesitated, staring up into his eyes. “Are you serious?”

“Never more serious in my life.”

A smile blossomed across her face. “You picked a helluva time to tell me.”

He shrugged. “It felt natural.”
