“It’s a keycard system. Only a certain number of personnel can get in and out based on their employee ID.”

“Like Robert Whitley?”

The man nodded. “A detective asked me about him earlier today. Whitley is on vacation this week. He’s somewhere on a guided fishing trip he’s been planning for months.”

“Do you know where?”

The man shook his head. “He told me, but I don’t remember. I told the detective to check with his wife.”

“How tall is Robert Whitley,” Jenna asked.

The man grinned. “He’s a couple of inches shorter than I am and heavier set.”

Jenna frowned. “What are you, about five feet ten?”

“Five-nine on a good day,” he said.

Jenna looked around a minute or two more, then glanced toward Cliff. “I’ve seen enough.” She smiled at the dock worker. “Thank you.”

The guard escorted them back to the hospital’s front entrance, where Jenna flashed her FBI badge and asked for the addresses of Nurse Grey and Robert Whitley.

Cliff cupped Jenna’s elbow and walked out of the hospital with her. “What are you thinking?”

“I want to see if Schwope followed up with Whitley’s wife and asked where he left his hospital ID card. Then we need to pay Nurse Grey a visit.”

Once in the truck, Cliff’s stomach rumbled. He glanced at his watch. “It’s getting late. You want to grab something to eat?”

“After we run by Nurse Grey’s house.” She handed the nurse’s address to Cliff and then called Detective Schwope, hitting the speaker button on her phone.

While Jenna’s phone rang, Cliff entered Nurse Grey’s address into the map application on his cell phone and shifted into drive.

“Special Agent Jenkins, you’ve got to be running on fumes by now.”

She laughed. “I am. Did you check with Robert Whitley’s wife about the location of his hospital ID card?”

“I did this afternoon. She said it was lying on his dresser in their bedroom where he’d left it before he went on his fishing trip.”

“Has anyone been in her house since he’s been gone?” Cliff asked, turning onto the main road

“She had a planning meeting yesterday with several volunteers who work at the food bank. I asked her to provide a list of names. She hasn’t gotten back to me with that list. I’ll let you know when she does.”

“What about today?” Jenna asked.

“She said she’s been gone most of the day at doctor’s appointments.”

“Anything interesting from your interview with Larry Sutton?”

“He claimed he arrived in town yesterday, an hour before the baby disappeared and went straight to the hospital where he was told he couldn’t see Brittany. From there, he went to a hotel across town and got a room. I checked with the hotel. They verified he was there at the exact time the baby disappeared.”

Jenna sighed. “Did you ask him about his wife and kids in Salt Lake City?”

“I did. He said he was single and didn’t know what I was talking about.”

Jenna snorted. “That’s what I got out of him. He seems very interested in the baby. It doesn’t add up with what Brittany said about him wanting to put it up for adoption.”

“Do you trust that what your sister is telling you is the truth?” the detective asked.

“Brittany has always been rebellious and marched to the beat of her own drum, but she’s never lied to me. She owns up to her mistakes.”
