Why else would he corner Jenna, demanding to know where she was?

CHAPTER 10

Jenna led the trio out of the women’s bathroom, with Cliff bringing up the rear.

Cliff would be damned if he let the weasel of a baby daddy out of his sight. He almost wished the bastard would try to make a run for it. He’d take great pleasure in bringing him down.

They waited in awkward silence at a table in the barroom. Thankfully, Detective Schwope arrived five minutes later and took charge of Sutton.

After the hand-off, Cliff grabbed Jenna’s hand. “Let’s go.”

She let him lead her out of the tavern to his truck before she ground to a halt. “Where are we going in such a hurry?”

“Back to the hospital.” He opened the passenger door and waited for her to climb in.

“Why?” she asked as she adjusted her seatbelt.

“I want to look at video footage again. We have to have missed something. If Sutton said he tried to see Brittany last night, he should be on one of the videos. And if he’s here demanding to know where the baby is, it means he doesn’t have her.”

Jenna nodded. “Unless he’s an even better liar than we give him credit for. I don’t think he’s that smart.”

Cliff rounded the truck and slid into the driver’s seat. “There has to be someone else.” He started the engine and shifted into Drive.

“I saw the janitor last night,” Jenna said. “I didn’t see his face, but I did note that he was tall with a thin build. Waters is the right height but has broader shoulders than the janitor I saw last night. Sutton is much shorter.”

“Maybe that person is working for or with Waters or Sutton,” Cliff suggested. “Or it’s someone working alone. I just think we’re chasing the wrong leads.”

“It’s too bad Sutton doesn’t appear to have the baby.” Her eyes narrowed. “I’d like to be the one to take him down.”

Cliff grinned. “I was hoping he’d make a run for it. I wanted to grind him into the ground.”

“My sister was convinced he has a wife and children in Salt Lake City. I know she’s been a bit of a flake, but why would she lie?”

“Give Swede time. He’ll get to the truth.” Cliff pulled out of the tavern parking lot onto the street, heading for the hospital.

They arrived at the hospital a few minutes later and parked.

Inside, Jenna flashed her FBI badge and asked to be escorted to the security office.

Jenna explained what she wanted to view and sat beside the security guard.

He brought up the video footage from the time Brittany had been brought into the hospital. They spent the next hour combing through the different camera angles, looking at the people entering the hospital and exiting after the baby had been delivered and moved to the nursery and, finally, to Brittany’s room.

The janitor on the third floor arrived shortly after Brittany had delivered the baby.

“Let me look at the corridors leading to the back loading dock,” Jenna said.

The guard brought up a couple of videos of two different hallways.

Jenna pointed to doors on either side of one of the hallways. “Where do these doors lead?”

The guard pointed to one. “That one goes to a storage closet. The other is the medical staff’s locker rooms.”

“Do all members of the medical staff use that room?” Jenna asked.

“Not all of them,” the guard said. “Just the ones who like to change out of their scrubs at the end of their shift.”

He advanced the video at one and a half times the normal speed.
