“Not if they are caught off guard.” Carleah grins. “I have a plan.”

Chapter 27

Carleah

“Carleah!” Fort bellows. “Guards! Get the fuck in here! Something is wrong with her!”

My eyes are closed, but I can hear the door unlock and scrape across the floor as it opens. Someone runs toward me, their hand going to my face. A crack across my cheek is meant to wake me up, and although it stings, I remain still.

“Don’t hit her, you idiots!” Alysia yells. “Let me see her. I’m a healer, dammit. It’s why you lot kept me alive!”

“You are not to be freed.”

“I bet your king would think differently,” she growls. “Unless, of course, you wish to explain to him why you let the Daughter of Ice die on your watch!”

Another crack across my cheek. “Wake up, girl,” the guard growls.

“Yes, because that is certainly going to work,” Alysia scoffs. “Given that it didn’t work the first time.”

The guard growls. “You are to fix her.”

“Fine. Great. Let me out.”

“One wrong move and I will skewer your elven friend on my sword then leave him here to rot before your very eyes,” the man warns.

My stomach twists.

“Fine.”

All that threat means is that we must succeed. Otherwise, Lacrae is dead anyway. We all are.

The scraping of metal against the ground fills my ears as Alysia’s cell is opened. I hear her footsteps as she rushes over to me, feel the softness of her hands as she touches my cheek. I keep my eyes closed, looking to the ceiling even as she opens both of my eyelids.

“What is wrong with her?”

“I don’t know. I need you to get her off of this damned thing so I can lay her flat. She likely passed out due to blood loss and if we don’t get it flowing again, she’ll die in minutes.” It sounds like an exaggeration, but seconds later, the guard is unlocking the chains binding me to the slab of obsidian.

I suppose brawn doesn’t equal brains in this scenario, and I’m quite happy this man seems to be missing a vital part of his ability to see through horse shit.

Large, meaty hands drag me down to the cold floor.

“My bag,” Alysia orders. “It has my medical tools in it.” He must hesitate a moment because Alysia says, “Your king allows me to use it whenever he has me heal the King of Navalis, does he not?"

The bile in my stomach rises at the thought that my brother has been injured so horrifically that they needed Alysia’s set of skills to keep him alive long enough to be tortured yet again.

Something falls to the ground beside me. Alysia gets to work, pressing various tools to my arms and chest. “Shit. I need water. Can you get me water?”

“I am not leaving you.”

“Where are we going to go?” she demands. “Vanish into thin air? I need water so I can dilute the scents needed to wake her."

Another lie that the man doesn’t see through.

“Remember what I said.”

“Yeah, yeah, you’ll skewer Lacrae if I’m naughty. I get it. Water.”

Heavy footfalls carry him away, and a door closes.
