“We aren’t like that, Osian,” I stammered.

“Then why the fuck did he follow me into a bathroom and threaten me? Why has he been breathing down my neck since I met you?”

“Merrick is my guardian.”

“That doesn’t mean he won’t try to fuck you.”

I drew myself up, done with the conversation. He saw the anger in my eyes and he balked, clearly realizing he’d gone too far.

“I’m leaving,” I said.

“Fine.”

“Okay.”

He emptied his second glass and picked up his phone. “I’ll call a car for you.”

I shook my head.

“No, thanks. Merrick will come and get me.”

Osian’s eyes flashed, seared with heat. He leaned on the counter, still shirtless, and cocked his head. There was an unexpected ugliness in him that unsettled me.

“Does Merrick usually fuck women young enough to be his daughter?” he said coolly. “Or is he just making an exception for you?”

“You’re drunk,” I snapped.

He snorted. I grabbed my coat and purse and left the apartment. Slamming the door. My eyes were wet as I rode the elevator to the first floor. I caught a glimpse of myself in the door.

Makeup smeared, eyes red.

I couldn’t see Merrick when I looked like this, all sticky and swollen from tears. He wouldn’t react well to Osian making me cry. I was already juggling too much drama and I didn’t need to stoke the flames over something this trivial.

Especially because this engagement meant so much to Merrick financially.

I called an Uber instead.

Then I went out to the club with Candice. This time, I couldn’t get Merrick’s face out of my mind. Disappointed, concerned. So I drank just enough to get me loose and dancing and cut myself off after that.

I was a little tipsy when I got back to the house. It was almost midnight so I stripped off my heels and scampered silently up the stairs. Merrick never went to sleep before one in the morning so I knew I could still talk to him about the jewelry.

His bedroom door was open. I frowned. Merrick never left his door open. He was anal about making sure doors were shut and locks were secured. Even inside the house.

I pushed it ajar and found the room completely silent and empty.

Alright…that was really strange.

My chest clenched. Had something happened and he’d left in a hurry?

No, if it was really a big deal, he would have called me. I felt around for my phone and remembered I’d left it on the hall table.

Damn it.

I stepped into his room to make sure it was really empty and my eyes fell on a beam of light coming from the bathroom. My heart stopped and I wobbled, putting out my hand to steady myself.

I lost my balance and sank to the ground. Frantically, I scrambled to my feet and looked up. Praying that if he was in the bathroom, he hadn’t heard me fall.

Fuck. Me.
