That was a loaded question. I bent, stretching back and looking up at the trees overhead.

“She wanted a break from Providence.”

“And she couldn’t take a girl’s trip with her friend or something?”

“Do you even know her best friend’s name?”

“Of course I do,” he said, slamming a car door. I heard his engine purr and it sounded like the call switched to Bluetooth. “As her future fiancé, I want to make it clear that this kind of thing can’t continue.”

Oh, someone had decided to grow some balls. Very cute.

“She’s not your fiancé yet,” I said coolly. “And if you don’t step it up, she may never be.”

He laughed shortly. “Like you’re going to give up more than a billion dollars a year to your organization for some pussy.”

Shock rippled through me and I was genuinely speechless for a moment. Not because I’d never heard that kind of talk before, but because he had the nerve to talk about Clara that way to my face.

I took a deep breath and let my anger simmer low.

“No one is getting pussy,” I said evenly. “You are not her fiancé until I accept the last piece of jewelry and she agrees to be pierced. Until then, she is free to travel, she is free to fuck, she’s free to do as she likes.”

“You’re too indulgent with her,” he snapped.

“You are rapidly falling out of my good graces, Cardiff.”

There was something in my voice that made him shut up for a moment. Then he cleared his throat and released a sigh.

“I think we got off on the wrong foot. Clara is very beautiful and I’ll admit I get jealous, but it’s not coming from a bad place. I’m looking forward to marrying her.”

That was more like it. Maybe Osian Cardiff was more than just a spoiled, nepotism baby. I certainly hoped so.

“I understand where you’re coming from,” I said.

“If you could please respect the fact that I am going to be her fiancé, I would appreciate that.”

“Again, I understand where you’re coming from.”

He released a slow, hissing breath.

“I am trying here,” he said coldly. “You’re making this a lot more difficult than it needs to be.”

“Is this because she won’t fuck you?” I asked, before I realized what I was saying.

There was a short silence.

“She’ll fuck me eventually, she’s just shy,” he said evenly.

Oh no, I didn’t like that.

“If you put any pressure on her to do anything she doesn’t want, I will beat you to a pulp with my bare hands. I’ve done it before, twelve times, and I don’t mind doing it again,” I said. “Not even your daddy’s money will be able to put you back together again.”

“You’re a fucking psycho,” he spat.

“I can be,” I said. “But only when provoked.”

I clicked my earbud, hanging up.

My body was soaked with sweat by the time I’d run all the aggression off and my mind was clearer. I hadn’t handled that well and I was going to need to reach out and make things right when I got home.
