I put on berry pink lipstick and fluffed my hair. Downstairs, the front door opened and I heard him in the hall.

“Clara,” he called. “I’m ready, so just lock the doors when you’re done. I’m going to make a phone call in the car.”

“Alright, I’ll be there in a minute,” I yelled.

I grabbed a black velvet handbag and left the house, punching in the code. He was leaning against the Audi, one foot crossed over the other. As I descended the steps, he paused mid-sentence.

Then he gave me the up and down glance. Quicker than a flash.

Warmth burst in my chest. I waited for him to open the door and I climbed into the passenger side. He hung up the phone and got into the car.

There was a long moment of silence.

The air was so thick I could feel my heart thumping. Like a vein pulsing between our bodies.

He pulled the car out onto the darkening road and we headed towards the highway. Everything in me was dying to say something to break the silence, but I couldn’t think of a single word.

We pulled up outside the restaurant. He helped me out of the car and guided me inside to his table in the corner.

I said something stupid about how the river looked beautiful at night with all those boats.

He said it did, but he didn’t take his eyes off me.

I ordered two Cosmos and drank the first in less than a minute. He noticed, but he didn’t say anything. The waiter brought him expensive whiskey, a single shot in one of those classy, crystal glasses.

It rested in his fingers.

His sexy, lean fingers with those square tips that had been inside me just days ago.

Heat surged up from between my thighs. My head swirled from the Cosmo, making me painfully aware of his gaze on me.

Who even had eyes that blue with lashes that dark?

It was fucking ridiculous.

“Did you have a good day with Candice?” he said.

I stared at him. “How did you know I was with Candice?”

“I have a tracker on you.”

I leaned back in my chair and tossed my hair. Of course, in the back of my mind, I knew Merrick wasn’t going to let me run around Providence without keeping tabs on me. But it was still fucking annoying.

“Why would you care where I’ve been?” I said, giving him a sweet smile. “Since we’re not anything to each other.”

“I’m your fucking guardian.”

His eyes flashed, not out of anger. More out of…grumpiness? I studied him. That was a bit odd, Merrick wasn’t one to succumb to melancholy.

I cocked my head. “Feeling grouchy?”

His brow crooked. “No.”

“Hmm.”

I kept my brow arched as I sipped from the straw. Merrick scowled and I could tell that little hmm bothered him. There was a long silence and his jaw went tense.

“What, Clara?”
