“You look great,” she said. “You’re really growing up.”

“Thank you,” I said. “I had a really relaxing week with Daphne and Ophelia.”

“Oh, how are the aunts? I haven’t been out that way in ages,” Owen said. “The last time I saw Daphne she said they were redoing the kitchen.”

“Yeah, they’re really good,” I said, forcing myself to stay relaxed. “The remodeling is going well. They both said to say hello when I saw you next.”

“Did you get any snow out at the farm?” Catrin asked.

She paused at the counter, her hand on her hip. Jewelry glittering on her manicured hand. She always looked so elegant and poised, not at all like Candice, who did everything she could to be the opposite.

“Yeah, a bit maybe,” I said nervously.

There was a clatter from behind me and I breathed an internal sigh of relief as Candice appeared. She hugged me from behind and scoped out the room, going to the cabinet to grab a bag of chips.

“You want something to drink?” she asked.

“I’ll take iced tea,” I said.

“How’s Merrick?” Catrin said. “I haven’t seen him around for a week.”

Into my mind flooded a hundred images from the last week. His tongue dragging down my stomach to my pussy. His eyes burning from between my legs as he made me come on his mouth.

Heat surged and I felt it creep up my neck.

No, no, not now.

“He’s fine,” I said quickly. “I haven’t really seen him. He had some business out of town or something.”

Candice grabbed my wrist and pulled me towards the stairs. “You can get caught up later, mom.”

Up in Candice’s room, I checked my reflection in the mirror. The heat had drained from my face. But there was something on my shoulder. Frowning, I leaned in and tugged my sweater aside.

My jaw dropped.

At some point, he’d given me a hickey. It must have happened the last day we were there and I hadn’t noticed.

“Oh my God,” Candice said, smirking. “Do you have a hickey?”

“No,” I said, covering it.

She bounced off the bed and pulled my sweater down, spinning me to face the mirror. Our eyes locked and slid down to the mark on my collarbone.

“Did you have sex?”

My stomach twisted. I was such a liar, such a bad friend.

“No,” I managed. “It’s nothing. I just saw Osian yesterday and we made out for a bit. I’m…trying to get used to it.”

Candice narrowed her eyes, making me feel like I was being X-rayed.

“Have you seen his penis yet?”

“Candice!”

She started laughing and climbed back onto the bed, opening the chip bag. I yanked my sweater up and joined her, crossing my legs.

“Are you having sex?” I said.
