“But that’s just it—you can’t promise.” She worried her bottom lip, brows drawn. “I don’t like this.”

“We talked about this,” he reminded her. “At great length.”

“I know, but...” Her eyes latched onto the transmitter. “Can’t you just get Morrigan to kill him now? She already has eyes on him.”

“I like how you think, Angel.” Morrigan’s voice floated through the speaker. The connection between them was still open.

“Is he still there?” Roman asked.

“Negative. He moved out the second he hung up. But I still have eyes on him. No doubt the car he’s traveling in is bulletproof, but that’s easy enough to work around,” Morrigan said. “Do we want to risk losing him again? Should I give him his one-way ride now?”

A one-way ride was mafia speak for murder, and yes, Godfrey would be getting his ticket to Hell soon. But Roman wanted to be the one to squeeze the life from the man’s body—after some prolonged torture. He also wanted to offer Angela the chance to slay her own demon. And that couldn’t be done if Morrigan got trigger-happy. “No. We stick to the plan,” he told Morrigan before looking at Angel. “We stick to the plan, Angel.”

She didn’t look convinced, but she nodded. “We stick to the plan.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

The message came in sooner than they were expecting. Roman had just enough time to bring Colt to the conference room, filling him in on his conversation with Godfrey. But that was it.

“Damnit. He wants to meet now,” Roman snarled, reading the message again.

“Now?” Sal repeated.

“Essentially. He’s giving us an hour,” he revealed bleakly.

“But that’s too soon. There’s no way we can get everything set up in time,” Abel said, shaking his head and looking concerned.

“I know,” Roman growled. Things were about to go FUBAR. “But what choice do we have?”

“Morrigan isn’t even back yet,” Sal said, his brow wrinkled with worry.

“We can’t miss this opportunity.” Roman stalked around for a moment, his brain working overtime. “Change of plans,” he decided.

“What? You can’t do that, Roman,” Angela disagreed forcefully. “You have to stick to the plan. We all agreed. None of this works if we don’t see this through like we discussed.”

Roman’s eye twitched. He didn’t have time to deal with Angela’s emotions. “Sometimes plans change, Angel. We need to pivot on the fly. I’ll take Abel with me, just the one man like Godfrey demanded. I’ll bluff him and find a way to put a tracking device on him. That way, we can find him later. But with no time now, there’s no way to abduct him.”

“Did you really just say pivot?” Angela snarked. “This is ridiculous. You’re not going to meet him with just Abel.”

“You don’t get to tell me what to do, Angel.” Roman’s voice held a warning he was hoping she would listen to.

“We can take a shot at him today,” Abel suggested, stepping between the bickering pair. “Between the two of us, I’m sure we can manage to get a shot off.”

Roman was already shaking his head by the time Abel finished his sentence. “A bullet between the eyes isn’t good enough. I’m not settling for a fast death. I want him under my roof where I can take my time dealing with him.”

“Roman, will you listen to yourself?” Angela pleaded. “You’re not being smart.”

“Maybe I’m sick of being smart. Did you ever consider that?” Roman roared. “Maybe I’ve had enough of being Mr. Nice Guy. I’m doing this for you, Angel. Or have you forgotten?”

“I haven’t forgotten anything. But it seems you have. Because this looks like it’s about you, not me,” Angela accused, pushing around Abel and getting in Roman’s face.

“Angel, all I do is cater to your needs,” he said flatly.

She reeled back. “Well, excuse the hell out of me. Here I thought we were in a relationship. A loving relationship.”

“Of course I love you!” he said, hating that they were arguing in front of people. It was bad enough that his inner circle was there to witness it. But Colt was also standing in the corner, looking awkward as hell.

“Yeah, well, I love you too,” Angela shouted back. “So, if you insist on being reckless and changing the plan, I’m coming with you.”
