He looked so tense. Angela hated this whole situation for him. “Last night was a success. We achieved what we set out to do, right? No New York?”

Roman stared at the view for a moment before giving his head a hard shake. “You’re right. I’m sorry I’m being moody. Yes, we got results. And no, for now New York is still on pause.”

She was so relieved. “What did Wayne tell you?”

Roman took her hand, leading her back to the fountain. They both sat on the edge. He relayed everything Wayne had said, ending with, “He had a private line to Godfrey. One he used to message Godfrey after he saw you in the club.”

“So, Godfrey will be expecting your call,” Angela surmised.

Roman nodded sharply. “I don’t intend to disappoint him.”

She worried her bottom lip with her teeth. “Do you think this will be over soon?”

“Yes. I know it will.”

She leaned her head against his shoulder, closing her eyes. “When will you make the call?”

“Soon,” he replied, stroking her hair. “I’m giving Luca some time to do his geek thing. He’s playing with Wayne’s phone right now. But he verified that the number on the card is real. The phone it’s linked to is heavily blocked, so he can’t determine the location now. But he’s confident he’ll be able to when the line is open.”

“That’s all positive,” Angela said, feeling optimistic for the first time in days.

“It is.” He turned to face her. “And what will you be doing while I talk to Godfrey?”

They had already discussed her being present for the call and determined it wouldn’t be a good idea. Roman needed to focus, and she needed to maintain some inner peace. “I have a big day of surgeries.”

“Maybe you should...”

She saw him struggle to leave the sentence unfinished and applauded him for it. “I can’t call in sick again. I can’t let my patients or the hospital down. Besides, I think saving someone would do me some good right now.” Roman laughed, startling her. “Something funny?”

His chuckles tapered off. “Not really. It’s us. I just sliced a guy open and pulled him apart. I did it to inflict the most amount of pain possible. I did it to kill him. And today, you’re going to slice someone open to heal them. You’re going to save them. You don’t think that’s odd?”

Her reply was fast and firm, bordering on snappy. “No. Ever heard of yin and yang? It’s called balance, Roman.”

Finally, the shadows in his eyes lightened and his lips quirked. “I really adore snarky Angela.”

She huffed, looking everywhere but his pretty face. “Lucky.”

Roman laughed lightly, tugging her back against his chest. “Will you thank Finn for me if you see him at the hospital today? I also recommend reminding him to keep quiet.”

“I will. But I’m certain he won’t do or say anything stupid. He’s not built that way.” She truly believed that.

“He came through,” was Roman’s response. High praise indeed. “But if he calls you smokin’ again, I’ll pluck out his eyes and feed them to the pigeons.”

Angela laughed. “I don’t think you need to worry about him stealing me away from you. Not when he has plans to marry Morrigan.”

Roman gurgled, wobbling, and almost pulled them both into the fountain. “Shit. Sorry. Maybe we should sit somewhere else.”

“How about we make our way back down,” she suggested. “I need to shower before work. And on the way, I’ll tell you all about Finn who believes Morrigan is his true love.”

“I’m always up for a good comedy,” Roman remarked. “But Morrigan isn’t. She’s not too thrilled with you telling Finn about her profession.”

Angela had been worried about that. But at the end of the day, Finn wasn’t going anywhere. Not now that the ice between them was officially broken. “I get the feeling he’s going to be around more. He would have found out sooner or later. Besides, we couldn’t have asked for a better reaction.”

“Couldn’t we?” Roman retorted, pressing the elevator button once they stepped inside. “He thinks it’s cool, Angel. Killing people for a living.”

She smiled, standing on her tiptoes to peck his lips. “Like I said, the perfect reaction.”
