“I’ll keep an eye on the police reports. See if they get any prints,” Luca said.

“Thanks,” Roman said gruffly, rubbing circles with his palm on Angel’s back.

“I want to know how he knew Angel was going to be there,” Morrigan said abruptly into the silent room.

Roman frowned at her. “What do you mean?”

“Well, picking up Claire was a last-minute detour. I didn’t know about it beforehand, and we weren’t followed,” she said.

“Are you sure?” Salvatore questioned, cocking his head.

Morrigan glared at him, pushing away from the wall. “Are you suggesting I don’t know when I’ve got a tail?”

“Shit, don’t jump down my throat. I was just asking.” Sal held up his empty hands. “We have to consider everything. Claire is hurt. She could have been killed, along with Angel. We can’t afford to miss anything.”

Morrigan grumbled under her breath for a moment before relenting. “Fine. But I wasn’t tailed. I’m positive.”

Angela stepped out of Roman’s arms but stayed close. She looked confused. “So, what? This guy was just lying in wait at the community center?”

Morrigan shrugged. “Maybe. I mean, if they were familiar with your habits, they would know that you go to the refuge frequently. They could have been there, waiting, and taken the opportunity when you showed up.”

“Now I have a stalker? Is that what you’re implying?” Angela asked incredulously.

“Not a stalker exactly. I’m just saying, this guy clearly knows your movements,” Morrigan explained.

More adrenaline shot through Roman’s system and he snapped. He pointed at his woman. “You’ll stay here from now on.”

She arched an imperious eyebrow at him. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me. We questioned whether or not Godfrey was still in town. Well, now we have our answer. It’s not safe for you out there. You’ll take a leave of absence from work, and you’ll move in here. I’ll have some men get your things.” He issued the orders like a drill sergeant.

Angela was silent for a moment before looking around. She made eye contact with Sal, Luca, and Morrigan. “Do you see them?” she inquired pleasantly. “The anxious expressions on their faces? They aren’t looking at me. They’re looking at you, Roman. Because they know I’m about to rip you a new asshole.”

Roman scoffed. “Now isn’t the time to be cute, Angel.”

“Cute?” Taking a measured breath in, Angela smiled stiffly at the others. “Will you please excuse us?”

Sal and Luca scrambled to their feet, rushing to the door. Morrigan was already there, and they ended up pushing and shoving each other to get out first. Roman would have laughed at their antics had he not been boiling with anger and fear. “Don’t start, Angela,” he told her flatly the moment they were alone. “This isn’t a suggestion.”

“Angela,” she repeated. “You’ve never called me Angela. You must be serious.”

“Very,” he confirmed.

“And, no,” she said. “I’m aware it isn’t a suggestion. It’s a decree.”

Roman nodded once, his jaw so tight he was worried he would grind his teeth into dust. “It is.”

“What makes you think you can order me around, Roman?” She posed the question with an even voice, despite her green eyes growing flat and cold.

“You’re mine,” was his clipped response.

Angela nodded slowly, keeping her eyes on his. “I am,” she confirmed.

He relax a bit at that. “So, you’ll do what I say.”

She shook her head, looking amused. But also pissed. “That’s not how this works.”

“It is if I say it is,” Roman immediately retorted. She was strong and brave and independent. All things he loved about her. But they were also a challenge. And now, when her life depended on it, was no time to challenge him.
