“Your heart is dead. You don’t count,” Abel informed Morrigan, who merely rolled her eyes.

“Actually, I turned you down as well. Remember?” Angela grinned impishly. “You said you wanted to fuck me and—”

“A joke!” Abel shouted, cutting Angela off. His laughter sounded forced as he watched a glowering Roman carefully. “That was just a joke, and before I really knew you.”

“Of course,” Angela agreed, taking pity on him. She didn’t want Roman to deck him.

“You asked Angela to fuck you?”

All heads swiveled to Claire, who was standing in the doorway with her hands on her hips, the two pit bull mixes by her side. She did not look impressed.

“I didn’t mean it,” Abel said quickly. He took a step towards Claire, but Mario bared his teeth, halting him in his tracks. Abel looked surprised but not angry at the dog.

Claire soothed Mario by playing with his ears. “Easy boy.” She pinned Abel with a haughty look. “You’re also conveniently forgetting me. I turned you down as well. That makes three women in the one room. Those are terrible statistics. It looks like your best womanizing days are behind you.” She walked over and gave Angela a hug, saying, “Call me or come knock on my door whenever you need.” Then she left, taking the dogs with her.

Everyone stared at Abel, who quickly pretended to receive a call. “Hello? Just one minute.” He held up his phone for all to see. “I need to take this,” he said before fleeing.

“Did you know Abel asked Claire out?” Angela asked the room at large.

“Nope. But the fact that she turned the walking penis down makes me like her a little more,” Morrigan said.

Angela snorted because Morrigan was still fighting her friendship with Claire. Morrigan believed liking Angela was enough, and she didn’t need to go around liking anyone else. Angela thought it was cute as hell. Claire was likewise on the fence about Morrigan, having yet to see her softer side. But Angela was hopeful.

She allowed Roman to tug her onto his lap after he sat in the chair she had vacated. “Update?” she inquired.

“Nothing worth mentioning,” Roman admitted angrily.

“I’m going to need you to mention it, Roman,” Angela said softly but firmly. “I was serious—I need to be kept in the loop. You don’t have to be worried about how I’ll handle it. I’ve got this.”

“Of course you fucking do. You’re a goddess,” Roman growled, pressing his lips against hers in a very X-rated kiss.

Salvatore cleared his throat. “Excuse me, not that I’m against heterosexual displays of affection, but is it cool if I go check on Luca soon?”

Angela pulled back, breathing hard. The man beneath her was lethal. She looked at Sal. “What did he discover overnight?”

Sal ran his hand over his head, scratching his scalp roughly. “Not much, I’m sorry to say. Nothing that leads to any other aliases or possible locations. He tracked the car with traffic cams to the docks. But by the time we arrived, there was no trace of Godfrey.”

“I suppose it was too much to hope for that this would all be over quickly,” she said with a shrug.

“We’ll find him, Angel,” Roman assured her.

“Damn right, we will,” Abel agreed, walking back in.

“Phone call finished?” Sal asked Abel archly.

Abel ignored his friend, bending over to pat Smith and Wesson instead. “You boys just keep growing.”

Angela thought it was a decent attempt at a subject change. And luckily for Abel, she had another one that would place all the focus back on her. “Well, until you do that, I need to work, Roman.”

Roman looked pained yet resigned. As if he knew she was going to bring up her job. “Angel...”

“You can have your goon squad follow me around. Even in the hospital,” Angela said, eager to compromise for perhaps the first time in her life. “I won’t try to lose them or anything. Scout’s honor.”

“As if you could lose them, Doc,” Abel scoffed. “They’re professionals.”

Angela ran her tongue along her top teeth, narrowing her eyes at him. “I lost you plenty of times.”

Abel gasped, looking offended. “Lies!” he accused.
