Angela turned around, smiling when she saw the nun. “Sister, good morning.”

Sister Pip took Angela’s outstretched hand with a warm smile, squeezing it.

“Good morning, Angela,” the nun greeted her happily. “Thank you for stopping by. I know how busy you are.”

“It’s no problem. I’m always happy to help,” Angela replied sincerely.

Morrigan coughed, saying, “Ass-kisser.”

Angela frowned at her. “Really?”

Morrigan simply shrugged. “You’re not fooling me. Nobody is that altruistic.”

“I am,” Sister Philomena interjected, looking amused rather than insulted. Morrigan grunted, causing the nun’s smile to grow. “Are you another friend of Angela’s? I’ve been meeting a lot recently.”

“I’m really not,” Morrigan said, looking a little offended. She turned to Angela. “Anyway, why don’t you join me for a drink later?”

Angela was sure she heard wrong. “A drink?” The other woman nodded. “Why would I want to do that?”

“So we can get to know each other better.” The duh was implied by Morrigan’s tone.

Angela shook her head. “And I repeat: why would I want to do that?”

Morrigan stared at her with eyes that held the promise of death before she grinned, slugging Angela in the shoulder. “You know what? You might just be all right.” She gave Sister Pip a jaunty salute before turning and walking away. “Let’s make it next week. I have things to do today. Later,” she yelled over her shoulder.

Angela stared at her retreating back in confusion. “What just happened?”

Sister Pip patted her arm. “I believe she is trying to make friends with you.”

“I’m sorry to disagree with you, Sister, but you’re wrong. That woman is the last person on the planet I could be friends with.”

“Didn’t you once say that about Abel?” the older woman reminded her slyly. “She seemed lovely to me. Very honest. It’s a good virtue.”

Angela made a non-committal sound, not wanting to argue with a nun. “Anyway, I only have forty-five minutes left. What can I do?”

“I was halfway through making up new first aid kits to hand out on the streets this evening.”

Angela nodded. “I’ll help. Do you need any more supplies?”

It was one of the things Angela had instigated when she began volunteering at the refuge. She had access to a bunch of out-of-date medical supplies. But really, do bandages and tape really expire? The amount of waste at the hospital was enough to give her hives. She understood it in theory, but in a world where there was such a huge divide between the haves and the have nots, it just wasn’t practical. Or ethical. So, she had gone to the hospital board and arranged for certain expired products to be donated to various shelters across the city. Then she had personally gone to dozens of them and shown the organizers and volunteers how to make small, but useful, first aid kits.

“Roman already arranged for everything. Enough to see us through for the next few months,” Sister Philomena disclosed.

Angela stumbled a little and did her best to cover it up by walking faster. “Roman?”

“That’s right. He has visited a few times now. Such a polite, handsome boy.”

“Boy?” Angela looked at Sister Pip askance.

“When you’re as old as me, dear, everyone is a boy.” Sister Pip nudged her with her shoulder.

Angela laughed, touching the nun gently on the arm. “You’re not that old, Sister.”

Sister Philomena huffed. “Almost ninety. I’m more than double Roman’s age. And yours.”

Angela didn’t like to think about Father Time creeping up on the elderly woman. Since the passing of her grandmother, she didn’t have any maternal figures in her life. Sister Pip was the only one.

“I didn’t hear you correct me about him being handsome?”
