“Because your cousin is in love with her,” Abel pointed out mildly.

When Roman didn’t deny it, Morrigan clipped, “Fuck.” She scowled at her feet for a moment before looking back up. “Fine. I’ll see what all the fuss is about.”

Roman’s lips twitched. Morrigan looked like she had just agreed to go to slaughter or something. “No maiming,” he saw fit to remind her. Even though he wasn’t feeling warm and fuzzy towards Angel thanks to the phone call, he wouldn’t have her hurt.

Morrigan looked outraged. “But...”

“No,” he said firmly. “Do not touch her. You remember Lenny, don’t you? The fucker who thought it was okay to lay hands on her?”

“Fine!” Morrigan snapped. She spun and flounced to the door. “Take away all my fun, why don’t you,” she said. Then she slammed the door on her way out.

“She is mental,” Abel noted from his spot on the couch.

Roman agreed. “I know it.”

“Thank God she’s on our side.” Abel studied his freshly polished apple for a moment before taking a bite. “I do feel sorry for the man she ends up with, though.”

Roman found the comment interesting. Just a week before, Abel would have been insinuating that he was the man who would one day tame Morrigan. “How is Claire doing?” he asked his friend casually.

Abel shrugged, munching his apple. “She’s doing good, I guess. She hasn’t come out of her room yet. She’s so timid. Like a little mouse.”

“And you don’t like mice?” Roman questioned.

“I like them just fine,” Abel replied. “Until they start chewing through your electrical wires and all your shit stops working.”

“You think your shit is going to stop working?” Roman pressed. If Abel was being philosophical, he was already in deep.

Abel frowned at him in confusion. “What are you talking about? My shit never stops working. You know that.”

Roman did know that. “What are we going to do about her? Has Luca found anything on her ex? I can have one of the guys from the bodyguard team assigned to her.”

Salvatore was the manager of Sentry Personal Security, one of Roman’s high-earning businesses. It wasn’t filled with your typical bodyguards. But his team of mercenaries and ex-military personnel always got the job done.

“Luca is my next stop,” Abel said. “And no to Sentry for now. There’s not much point when she’s hiding in one of the guest rooms. She hasn’t said much else about what’s happened to her. Just that her ex has been following her and making her life hell. I’ll take her to get her stuff when she’s ready to venture out.”

Roman didn’t like the thought of her out on her own for various reasons. One of them being her safety. But the larger one being the possibility of her going to the cops and ratting on Abel for beating up Robert. Yes, the guy had been attacking her. But the psychology behind domestic assault victims and their abusers was complicated. Roman knew that personally. “Do you think she’s a flight risk? Will she talk?”

Abel grunted, finishing off his apple. “No more than Angel,” he answered quietly.

Roman raised his brows, rocking back on his feet. “Interesting.”

Abel’s blue eyes flashed to his. “I didn’t mean it like that, and you know it.”

“Like what?” Roman prodded.

Abel rolled his eyes in annoyance and got to his feet. “I’m not claiming Claire. I haven’t fallen for her like that.”

Roman latched onto the bit of wiggle room Abel’s response allowed. “Like what?”

“Like she’s going to be the mother of my future babies,” Abel teased with a grin.

Roman thought about Angel round with child, and his heart did a roll in his chest. He had never, not once in his life, given any thought to having children. He’d never had any desire for them. His mother had been a wonderful woman and an even better matri. But his father had been a terrible role model and was responsible for shaping Roman into the man he had become.

Abel whistled low, drawing Roman’s attention. “Damn, man. You should see the look on your face. You have it bad.”

Roman couldn’t deny it. He just hoped, one day, Angel would have it bad as well. Otherwise, he was going to be a nightmare to live with.
