Page 17 of What Love Is

Oh yes, Toro knew Dutch. He just wanted to see if Sera would share anything with him.

“My business is mine alone.” She didn’t look at him.

She could say whatever she wanted. “I’m coming with you.” He didn’t know what business she had with Dutch, but he wasn’t someone to be trusted.

She jerked her gaze to him. “You’re pushing me,” she said slowly, carefully. “I don’t like being pushed, Toro.”

Ah, he was Toro now. “Only thing that will stop me from being at your side is a bullet. So shoot me or let’s go.”

She stared at him. “There is only so much leeway that magic tongue of yours can buy.”

“You onlythinkthat’s the reason you give in.” He gripped the door handle and opened it. “But I know better.” He held out a hand. “Come on.”

She put her hand in his and he stroked his thumb over her knuckles before helping her out. He followed her lead, putting his game face on as he scanned the open area. He hated meetups like these and if he’d been asked, he’d have vetoed that shit.

But this wasn’t his playing field. It belonged to the woman walking in front of him, hips swaying with every step. He liked that. He even liked the sound of her heels on the asphalt.

Goddamn.

He hung back but made sure he stayed within earshot, listening as she greeted the other man. “Dutch”

He scowled. “What do you want?”

So, no love lost there. Toro bristled at Dutch’s open hostility toward Seraphina, though it didn’t seem to faze her one bit.

“Where is he?”

Dutch’s jaw ticked. “This is what you called a meeting for?” His gray gaze lifted from Seraphina to glance around, disdain on his features as he took in her men. But when he spotted Toro, he stopped. Recognition flashed in his eyes. Toro tensed.

“Answer the question, Dutch. Or should I call you Hunter?” Seraphina cocked her head. “You used to love when I did that. You did whatever I wanted then.”

“The next time you call meanything, it will be the last thing you do. Don’t play with me.”

Toro locked his jaw to keep from shooting that fucker. Seraphina didn’t need him to defend her, but he wanted to. Needed to.

“You already know how I feel about you and your threats.” She chuckled. “They’re annoying, and I tend to wreck shit when I get annoyed. Now… The house in Queens is abandoned. There’s been nobody there in months. I know you and Reggie are buddies. You have to know where they are.”

Dutch’s mouth twisted. “There’s a reason you don’t know where your son is. That reason is you.” He turned back to his vehicle, gripping the door handle. “This meeting was a courtesy that will not be extended again. Forget you know me. Because I’ve already forgotten I know you.” He hopped into the vehicle, and it pulled off before his door was even closed.

Seraphina stood there, hands fisted at her sides, watching the SUV’s taillights until they disappeared. Then she started walking back to the car.

Toro followed, what he’d just heard rolling around in his head like thunder.

Son.

Seraphina had a son.

How old was he? Where was he?

He held the questions in until they were back inside the car. “You used to fuck that Dutch guy.”

“Yes.” Her voice was hoarse, hands all twisted around each other in her lap. “Back when he was fun.” She lifted her head and met his gaze squarely. “Are you jealous?”

He ignored that absurd question she’d obviously asked in order to start some bullshit between them. “You have a son.”

She flinched. “You’re not the only man in my life.”

She was definitely spoiling for a fight, but he refused to give it to her. “What happened to him?”
