As if in slow motion she saw his head turn her way. It was a reflex, no thought involved at all, when she ducked down into a crouching position behind the car.

The thinking started once she was there.

‘Should I ask?’

Rose looked at the shiny handmade shoes just in front of her and thought,Oh, someone kill me now, put me out of my misery!

‘Shall I join you?’

Oh, Rosehatedhim in that moment, hated him for having a front-row seat to her humiliation, and enjoying it.

‘I take it that is theslime ball...?’

Things got worse—she could no longer pretend he hadn’t heard every word.

‘He’s coming across,’ Zac observed conversationally.

‘Oh, God!’

‘What’s the problem? No possibility of misconstruing the situation, is there, you on your knees at my feet...?’

Rose, her cheeks burning bright, shot to her feet so quickly that she would have overbalanced if his hands had not cupped supportively around her elbows. There was barely a whisper of space between them and, looking at his chest, she stepped hastily back, or tried to as the grip on her elbows didn’t loosen.

Rose’s head tilted back to meet his dark stare. It was a dizzying experience...the lights dancing in his dark eyes had a hypnotic effect.

‘Thanks, I’ll take it from here.’ She had to face the cringe situation. Who knew? Maybe she could extract a scrap of dignity out of it.

Not likely but possible. She had never told Jac that after the dinner party, previous to ghosting her, Andy had cornered her and suggested a threesome with one of the other dinner-party guests. A man who he declared was out of her league, who had liked herstyle...acting as if it were a compliment, not an insult! She had wanted so badly to slap his slimy smug face. Instead her stuttered response had drawn a mocking laugh from him and aforget itthrown over his shoulder.

‘No, I don’t think so. I have this one. You want to see him kick himself for not realising what he had? You want him to feel small and insignificant?’

Actually, now that he said it, that was exactly what she wanted, but it wasn’t going to happen. ‘Oh, God!’ Her sense of impending doom increased as she heard her name being called.

‘I already knew what he did. I just didn’t know until I overheard your conversation that the woman they were talking about was you.’

She looked at him in horror. Greece was not far enough, she would have to move to Alaska to escape the gossip!

‘So that’s a yes?’

‘No, it’s...’ She sighed and nodded, humouring him.

‘Let’s do it, then.’

‘What?’ Rose’s eyes widened as one of his big hands slid to her waist, the other curved around her face, tipping it up to him. He scanned the oval of her face for a moment, his restive glance finally landing on her lips and staying there.

Rose watched him, her vision blurring as his head bent until his mouth was a whisper away from hers... Her eyelids felt weighed down, so heavy she couldn’t keep her eyes more than half open as she looked up at him. Her breath held inside her chest, her heart was hammering, pounding in her ears.

Zac released her waist, his expression intent as he stroked the cushiony softness of her full lower lip with the pad of one thumb, before bending his head and tugging the same spot with his teeth, the whisper touch, the sensual slide of his firm lips across the pouting curve sending a deep trembling quiver through her body.

She leaned into the pressure as the kiss deepened and grabbed hold of his jacket to strain upwards, her senses absorbing the warmth and the hardness of his body. Flames burnt away rational thought, silencing theThis is a bad ideaas it was washed away by a dark sense of excitement exploding in her brain as she kissed him back.

Then it was over. He unwound her arms, which had crept up around his neck, and nodded over her shoulder.

Rose fell back on her heels, colour draining from her face and a moment later rising back until her cheeks burned. Mortified because she was shaking, the pulse between her legs still throbbing, her breasts tingling where they had been pressed into his chest, she resisted the impulse to touch her tingling lips. Echoes of the shocking intimacy of the moment were reverberating around her skull.

To add another layer of mortification, Zac, who was adjusting his shirt cuff, looked utterly cool.

‘W-why...?’ Her stuttered monosyllabic response covered most of the questions swirling around in her head.
