They stare at each other, exchanging words without speaking.

Then Alex turns to me. “Did you do it to take his place?”

“My place is to protect the family. That’s why I did it.”

Matteo sits forward as he wipes his palm over his bushy black beard. “And you want us to come to New York with you to fight with the Sinacores.”

“Luca’s wife has been taken hostage by Black. A call has been put out for support. I’m going because I gave my word in exchange for support of ourfamiglia. Will you join me?”

Both men nod without hesitation.

Alex grins. “It’s been a long time since we’ve had a good fight. Who knows? Might be a good day to die.”

Matteo gives him a sideways glance. “Speak for yourself. I’m not fuckin’ dyin’ today. I’m going to kill some assholes, not the other way around.”

They follow behind me as I leave the study and make my way down the hall to the weapons room.

“Who’d have thought we’d be fighting with the Sinacores,” Alex says, shoving three pistols into his holsters. “Especially after that shit Luca pulled when he stole our shipment.”

“They didn’t have to warn us about Black,” I remind them. “Tony lost his life trying to save his enemies. We owe him.”

The men give me a nod of agreement.

After we’ve properly armed ourselves, we load into one of the family’s black Tahoes, along with four of our soldiers. And ready to battle alongside the deadly Sinacores, we leave for New York.

By the time we arrive at Briar House, several men are standing beside large black SUVs, armed and ready.

Luca racks his gun and slides it into the hilt as he walks over to me. I roll down the window when he approaches.

“This is Matteo, Alex, and a couple of their men,” I introduce.

He peers into the Tahoe at the men and nods. “Thank you for coming on such short notice.”

“Who else showed up?” I ask, looking ahead at the few vehicles.

“I have Gunn and Gavin Alexander, plus a few soldiers. I’m leaving the house highly secured in case Black decides to attack it while we’re distracted.”

From the front door of the mansion, a familiar woman appears, her arm around an older man’s shoulders.

“Wait a minute, isn’t that your wife?” I ask.

Luca’s gaze flicks over to them. “That’s her twin, Alma, with their father, Gregorio.”

“I thought you were married to—”

“Carina is my wife,” he states. “She’s the one Black took and wants Gregorio in exchange for her life.”

I shut my mouth, not needing or wanting any more information on whatever the fuck is going on with that. “Are you ready?”

“Beyond ready,” he grits through his teeth. Oh yeah, he’s ready. Anger and rage simmer just beneath his skin.

“Let’s get your wife.”

Luca gives the Tahoe two slaps, then winds his hand through the air in the universal motion to wrap it up. Anyone not already in one of the cars hurriedly gathers his shit and scrambles in.

The three-car caravan moves as one, flying down highways at speeds that would get anyone arrested. But fortunately, we either don’t pass any cops or the ones we do, recognize this for what it is.
