“OhGod, Jessa,” he moaned and rested his forehead on mine, peering down to watch himself press in and out of me.

I guessed he wanted to savor it, keep the image in his mind, because this was it.

“You made it,” I said as he pushed my knees back, hitting me even deeper. “I’m going to miss you.” My voice cracked, and I didn’t want to cry.

The man I loved was leaving, probably within the next few days, forever.

He wouldn’t be able to drive those 115 miles every time he won. I wouldn’t be able to drive 115 miles to see a Serpents game, and then…drive back home in the same evening to go to work after a Thursday game?

Zach’s thrusting stopped, and he turned my face until I was forced to meet his gaze. “What do you mean?”

“This is it, right? They’re keeping you.”

He nodded once. “They’re keeping me…but this isn’t it, baby. Did you think I’d give up on you so easily?”

I shrugged. “My own family left. Why would you be any different?”

“Because Iamdifferent. I want to be different, and I want to be with you, Jessa. Only you.”

“It won’t work. We can’t make it work.” I pointed out the obvious.

“We can.” He threaded his fingers with mine, slowly thrusting into me. “And we will. I will make it work because Iwantto make it work. I want to be with you, and only you, baby. You’re my girl.”

“What?”

“You’re mine and I’m yours. Been like that since I first saw you in my kitchen.”

“Mykitchen.”

He grinned. “Fine.Yourkitchen, lucky.”

EPILOGUE

JESSA

EIGHT MONTHS LATER

“So,you’ve got the fall minor league registration,” Andrew began.

“Uh-huh.”

“Then there’s skills and drills, power skating, and the learn-to-shoot year-round programs through…”

“Extreme Hockey,” I offered, scribbling it down.

“Yeah, that’s right. And then it’s the summer camps. That’s all your programs, kiddo. Sounds like a great setup you’ve got up there.”

I sighed and shifted the phone from one ear to the other. “Can I do this?”

“You bet you can, kiddo. You can do anything you put your mind to. And your mom and I will be up to visit pretty much every weekend…”

“Dad,” I groaned.

He chuckled. “Fine, fine. Everyotherweekend, so if you have any questions, or shit just isn’t adding up, I’ll be there to help you work through it. I’m only a call away.” He paused and sniffed. “Going to be weird not having you just down the hall, kiddo.”

I leaned back in my new office chair that didn’t squeak, feeling the cool air from the vent that wasn’t broken, and wiggled the mouse of my computer that didn’t randomly shut down every few days.

“I’m only two hours away,” I told him.
